Baby, It’s Cold Outside: Four Ways to Stay Hydrated This Winter
As the days get colder–and our outdoor workouts get less sweaty–it’s easier to overlook the importance of staying hydrated. And while you may feel fine with drinking less water, your body disagrees: Getting enough water is just as important in the fall and winter as it is in the summertime. (Just ask your dry skin and chapped lips!)
If you’re not likely to tote a water bottle around when it’s freeeeeezing out, opt for these seasonal strategies. And if even if you do carry yours everywhere, these easy tricks will help you get some extra H20.
Eat your fluids.Fruits and veggies are packed with water, and according to Angela Ginn, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, that high water content adds volume and keeps you satisfied without the calories. Low-cal soups are also a great way to sneak in some extra water.
Warm up your morning commute. Take a cozy tumbler full of tea with you when you leave the house for the day. Not only will it keep you warm and hydrated, but it’ll do a body good–black tea may even prevent your body from absorbing fat from food!
Go decaf after noon. Full-octane coffee is a “must” for some of us in the AM, but caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can be dehydrating. If you need a post-lunch pick-me-up, take a brisk walk to Starbucks for a decaf latte. The fresh air and exercise will work just as well, we promise.
Drink a glass of water before each meal. If you make this a habit, then it’s not such a big deal if you forget to drink water during the rest of the day. Bonus: It may help you eat less, as well.
