Clayton Pond: 50 Years Later: A Retrospective of Paintings & Prints

Clayton Pond's paintings and prints transform the familiar objects of everyday life - even mundane utilitarian items like chairs, radiators, and fans - into monumental icons of American culture. A pioneer in screen printing processes, Pond presents his subjects with his characteristic use of bold color intensities, contrasting color relationships, and a degree of abstraction and pictorial flatness. Coming of age in New York City in the late 1960s, Pond's paintings and serigraphs reflect aspects of the Pop art and Op art movements, but ultimately reflect his own uniquely personal style.

Clayton Pond began his art studies at Hiram College before moving on to advanced work in Pittsburgh and New York. This exhibition brings Pond's art back to Hiram, and charts the progress of his prolific career over the years, as well as recent developments in his work.

Clayton Pond's paintings and prints are in the permanent collections of more than 50 museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
