Overseas U.S. Citizen/LPR Financial Aid
Scholarships
Merit scholarships are competitive and awarded without regard to family financial circumstances. Scholarships are determined on the basis of academic preparation and performance, standardized test scores, class rank, teacher recommendations, and personal essay, with the strongest emphasis placed on academic performance.
Students, who have completed applications turned into the Office of Admission by February 1, are automatically considered for scholarship after being admitted to the College. Scholarship notification generally occurs in March and April. Scholarships range from $3,000 to full tuition and are renewable annually for four years of study. There is no separate scholarship application; the application for admission serves as both.
Need-Based Aid
Aid in the form of grants, student loans, and work-study employment is determined using family financial data reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students wishing to be considered for need-based aid should submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2008 and preferably no later than February 15. There is no separate Hiram College institutional financial aid form. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Using Hiram College School Code 004049 when completing the FAFSA will insure that the data is sent directly to Hiram.
Supplemental FAFSA Instructions for Overseas Students
The FAFSA application requires online signatures. To sign the FAFSA electronically, a student must have a 4-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) assigned by the U.S. Department of Education. You can apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.
Additionally, since you are a dependent student, you must have a parent signature to complete the FAFSA. If at least one your parents is a citizen or LPR of the U.S., that parent also can apply online for a PIN and sign the FAFSA electronically.
If neither parent is a citizen or an LPR of the U.S, the following procedure is necessary. Using the student PIN signature, submit all financial data online. Be certain to print out the signature page of the FAFSA. Both you and a parent should hand sign and date the signature page and send it to the address in the U.S. identified for processing. It is advisable to use a courier to send it so you can track its delivery and know when it is received at the processing center. Using your PIN signature online and then submitting the student’s and parent's hand signatures together will confirm the parent's written signature.
Additionally, the following will be helpful to complete the FAFSA:
- Questions 6 and 18: If you reside outside of the U.S. use the drop down table to select “other” when responding to the request for “state.”
- Questions 21 and 22: Male students (aged 18 - 25) must be registered with selective service in order to apply for need-based aid. If you are not yet registered with selective service, you may check “yes” to question 22 and your name will be sent to selective service for registration - or you may first go to www.sss.gov and register online for selective service before completing and submitting the FAFSA.
- Questions 57 and 61: If your parents are foreign nationals who do not have a U.S. social security number, insert 0 (zero) in each of the social security number blanks.
- Question 71c: Complete this question if your parents file a tax return in your country of residence provided that your country of residence is NOT the U.S.
