Psychobiology

   1. Which courses are for first year students who wish to explore new areas of interest, but have no clear intent to major in this area?

      Psychology 101, Biology 141 and 142, and Chemistry 120 and 121 are appropriate for first year students to explore their interest in psychobiology.
   2. What is the desirable course work a prospective major/minor should complete by the end of their first year and the end of their second year?

      Majors:Completing Psychology 101, Biology 141 and Biology 142 in the first year. During the second year it is desirable to take Psychology 215, Chemistry 120 and 121, and one additional Psychology or Biology requirement. A major must receive a grade of C of better in Psychology 101 and 215.

      Minors: A minor is not offered.
   3. What is the minimum a prospective major/minor must do by the end of their first and second year?

      Majors:The student interested in psychobiology should at least complete Psychology 101 and 215, plus either Biology 141 and 142 or Chemistry 120 and 121.
   4. How important is it for a student with some interest in majoring in your area to make contact with a member of your department?

      Students interested in majoring in Psychobiology definitely should make contact with the program coordinator before the end of their second year.
   5. What are the major pitfalls a student should avoid during their first year and how can an advisor help the student to avoid them?

      Not completing either the Biology or the Chemistry introductory sequences during the first two years at Hiram. Many required courses have one, or both, of these sequences as prerequisites.

      Not scheduling carefully and having to take three laboratory courses at one time.
