   1. Which courses are for first year students who wish to explore new areas of interest, but have no clear intent to major in this area?

Music 101, 102, 103,104, and 210 are suitable for non-majors but they do not fulfill a requirement in any of the tracks in the major.

Music 121-highly recommended for anyone even considering a major or minor.
   2. What is the desirable course work a prospective major/minor should complete by the end of their first year and the end of their second year?

Majors:completion of the music theory sequence during the first four semesters of enrollment; completion of two music history courses by the end of the second year; enrollment in private study and ensembles. An EMS trip is discouraged until the third year.

Minors:completion of one year of music theory by the end of the second year; enrollment in private study and music ensembles(s); begin to fulfill the music history requirements. It is possible to complete the minor by the end of the second year.
   3. What is the minimum a prospective major/minor must do by the end of their first and second year?

Majors:Completion of one year of theory, and one course in music history with private study and ensemble participation.

Minors:It is conceivable, though not recommended, that a minor could be started at the beginning of the third year.
   4. How important is it for a student with some interest in majoring in your area to make contact with a member of your department?

It is absolutely essential to contact the department. There are diagnostic entrance requirements that must be met, as well as a fairly inflexible course of study to be followed. One ill-advised decision can cause serious predicaments.
   5. What are the major pitfalls a student should avoid during their first year and how can an advisor help the student to avoid them?

Interrupting the music theory sequence. Student should make every effort to fulfill the music theory component during four successive semesters.

Failure to communicate intent to major or minor in music to the department
