1. Which courses are for first year students who wish to explore new areas of interest, but have no clear intent to major in this area?
Art 102, 110, 120 are suitable for non-majors. They fulfill requirements for both art and art history majors, but they do not fulfill distribution requirements. Art 106 is suitable for non-majors and can be used as a distribution requirement. It is better for non-majors than History of Western Art. Art 130 is highly recommended for anyone even considering a major or minor in Art or Art History. It fulfills requirements for both majors and minors, and it fulfills a distribution requirements.
2. What is the desirable course work a prospective major/minor should complete by the end of their first year and the end of their second year?
Art Major: Art 102, 110, 130 (also 120 for those interested in Photography) and one or two additional art courses by the end of the second year.
Art History Major: Art 130 and one or two additional Art History courses by the end of the second year.
Minors: Completion of Art 130 and one additional Art or Art History course by the end of the second year.
3. What is the minimum a prospective major/minor must do by the end of the first and second year?
Majors: Completion of two Art or two Art History courses (preferably chosen from those listed in response to question 2).
Minors: It is conceivable, though not recommended that a minor could be started at the beginning of the third year.
4. How important is it for a student with some interest in majoring in year area to make contact with a member of your department?
It is important to contact the department to acquire an advisor and begin to devise a course of study.
5. What are the major pitfalls a student should avoid during their first year and how can an adviser help the student avoid them?
Not taking a 100 level course before embarking on upper level course work.
