Academic Review Board Policies
Academic Status
Students are expected to maintain at least a 2.00 grade-point average and complete 30 credit hours each year. Failure to meet these criteria usually indicates that a student is not making satisfactory progress. Such students are asked to consult with their faculty advisors and counselors in the Office of Dean of Students. A grade point average of 2.00 must be maintained in the student’s major course work in order to graduate.
Students who have failed to maintain a 2.00 grade-point average for all their work will be placed on academic probation by the Academic Review Board.
Students on probation must demonstrate satisfactory improvement to remain in school. Suspension from Hiram for continued unsatisfactory performance occurs only after deliberation with the Academic Review Board.
A student who is on probation must meet the following conditions for each semester that the student remains on probation.
1. The students must enroll in and complete at least two courses in the 12-week session and one course in the 3-week session. These courses must each carry at least three semester hours of credit, they must be graded (i.e. not Pass/No-Credit), the students may not withdraw from the courses nor take an incomplete in any of the courses unless they have permission from the Academic Review Board.
2. None of the courses chosen for the semester may be independent study courses, nor may they be courses already taken for which the grade received was C or better.
3. The student must achieve a GPA for all courses taken in the semester of at least 2.00.
A student who fails to meet any of these conditions for the semester is subject to suspension from the college at the end of the semester.
Requests for exemptions from and changes in these conditions must be by written petition to the Chair of the ARB. The petition must be approved by the ARB before the exemption or change can be made.
Special Categories:
For the non-transfer students in their first year the following conditions apply:
1. Students who receive a .5 gpa or lower after their first semester will most likely be suspended from the college.
2. Students who receive between a GPA of .51 and 1.49 during their first semester will be placed on probation.
3. Students who earn a GPA of between a 1.5 and 1.99 during their first semester will receive a first-year warning letter. If after their first year their gpa improves to 2.0 or better they will be in good standing. If the gpa is still below 2.0 they will be placed on probation.
