H.A.R.T. to perform at Alliance schools
The Hiram Actors Repertory Theatre (H.A.R.T.) will take its
plays concerning Ohio history to
elementary and middle schools in
Alliance
this week after recent well-received performances in Canton,
Bellevue, and Troy,
Ohio.
The student company of Molly Monks, Michele Muirfield, Brian Coxe, Kayleigh Sopko, Rachel Goldberg, Leah Rectanus, Jim Hill, and Jesse Ogden created different “scripts” through improvisation. The cast uses a quilt as a symbol to tie together the diverse aspects of Ohio history in its shows.
“The shows are a ‘patchwork’ of different people and things,” said Richard Hyde, professor and chair of theatre arts, who directs the company.
The elementary schools show tells five stories—one about an old Indian legend and others that feature Johnny Appleseed, Annie Oakley, the Underground Railroad, and the Wright Brothers.
The middle schools program includes four stories inspired by Tecumseh, the Underground Railroad, Jesse Owens, and Vietnam War confrontation at Kent State between students and Ohio National Guardsmen.
“We hope to develop H.A.R.T. further so that we are doing lots more bookings,” Hyde said. “We would eventually like to do an all-arts program that during every winter three-week we would take to schools to provide arts programming the schools could not otherwise afford.”
Among the schools at which H.A.R.T. has performed is Canton Country Day School. The visit is noted on the school’s website at www.cantoncountryday.org.
