Candidate Forums This Week

Two important candidate forums are being held this week to help local voters become educated about the upcoming election.

On Wednesday evening, November 3, the seven candidates for Hiram Village Council will share their views about the future of the village, town/gown relations, and the income tax and replacement levy issues.  The "Meet the Candidates" night will begin at 7 PM at the Coleman Rec Center on Hiram's campus.  The event is being sponsored by The Weekly Villager newspaper and Hiram College Student Senate.  Jody Schroath from The Villager will be moderating.  Information about other issues on the ballot -- including Issue 1 -- will be available.

On Tuesday, November 2, the candidates for Crestwood Schools Board of Education will have a chance to speak about their positions.  The forum will be held at 7 PM in the Crestwood Primary School, and is being sponsored in part by Hiram's Office of Citizenship Education.

All Hiram students, faculty, and staff eligible to vote in these elections are encouraged to attend.  The events are open to the public, and refreshments will be served at both.

Trick or Treat in the Residence Halls a Success

Over four hundred people from the community invaded the Hiram Residence Halls last Thursday as part of the annual Trick-or-Treat program sponsored by the Office of Residential Education and RSA.  Kids were invited to go in the residence halls, where Hiram students were in their rooms handing out candy.  RSA also sponsored a "goblin playroom" where kids could color and play games that were Halloween-themed.  "Everyone had a blast," said Resident Director Justin Fitzgerald in Booth-Centennial.  "It lifted the spirits of not only the trick-or-treaters but certainly our residents as well."

Athletics Update

Last week saw the end of two seasons, the celebration of two careers, and a first for any Hiram College team. Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams finished the season on a positive note with victories in their final games. On Tuesday night the volleyball team not only clinched the #1 seed in this weekend’s NCAC Volleyball Championship but also celebrated the careers of two very accomplished seniors: Beth Groselle and Shana Toth. The week finished with a bang with the volleyball team capturing Hiram’s first-ever NCAC regular season title as they swept Kenyon to go a perfect 8-0 in conference play.

The men’s soccer team finished 6-10-2 overall and 2-5-2 in conference play, defeating Kenyon on Saturday 2-1 in their final game of the season.

The women’s soccer team finished 3-14-1 overall and 1-7 in conference play, splitting with their opponents last week. The Terriers opened the week with an 8-0 loss to Allegheny before closing the season in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 overtime win over Shawnee State.

The volleyball team, now 27-3 overall and 8-0 in the conference, won their both contests last week, defeating Oberlin and Kenyon each 3-0. The Terriers look to continue their strong play as they host the NCAC Volleyball Championship on Friday and Saturday. Hiram enters the tournament as the #1 seed after completing the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record, marking the first time in school history that Hiram has captured an NCAC regular season title. The Terriers open up the tournament on Friday when they take on the #4 seed College of Wooster.

The football team, now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference, lost to the College of Wooster 59-17. They look to rebound this week as they play host to Kenyon on November 5th. This will be the final home game of the season and the football team’s Senior Day.

The cross country teams competed in the NCAC Championships last week. The women finished in ninth place while the men finished tenth. They both return to action on November 12th as they travel to the NCAA Regional Championships in Wilmington, OH.
