Learn how to navigate corporate waters
On Tuesday, October 17, Jim Gould, vice president of
internal and external communications for Hartford Financial Services Group,
will give students some insider tips about how to advance up the corporate
ladder. Gould, who holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a Master of Fine
Arts, will be speaking in the Alumni Heritage Room from 9:40 to 11:40 a.m.
Hartford is one of the largest investment and insurance companies in the United States with offices in Japan, Brazil, Ireland, and England. Hartford Financial Services Group has almost 30,000 employees and had $2.3 billion in income in 2005. The company ranked 78 on the 2006 Fortune 100 list of U.S.-based corporations with the largest annual revenue.
Assistant Professor of Management Arul Thirunavukkarasu (a.k.a. “Dr. T”) arranged for Gould’s visit as part of his course, Management 301: Marketing Management. The visit is sponsored by the Department of Management, and the presentation is open to all members of the Hiram College community.
Phillips presenting at Society for Neuroscience
Kimberley A. Phillips (pictured left), associate professor of psychology and
biology, and senior psychology major Holly M. Koslosky of Mantua are making a
presentation at the Society for Neuroscience, which is meeting today, October
16, and Tuesday, October 17, in Atlanta.
Phillips and Koslosky were joined by Courtney Buzzell, research and teaching associate in psychology and biology, in authoring “Cerebellar asymmetry and hand preference in capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).”
Their research was supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The grant funds integrating research into undergraduate courses, in this case, neuroscience. Koslosky also received a HHMI summer fellowship this year to support her wok on the project.
Wednesday: Opening reception/gallery talk by Andrea Joki
On Wednesday, October 18, the Frohring Art Gallery
will host an opening reception for “sound sites,” a show by Cleveland
artist Andrea Joki. “Sound sites” features works by the artist that are
visual
interpretations of sound, including "Spillway" (pictured right), an
acrylic, pencil, and collage composition on rice paper. The reception
will begi
n at 5 p.m. and will include an artist’s talk. The reception is
open to the public.
Joki is an abstract artist who has participated in several
group exhibitions in Ohio and Wisconsin,
as well as a solo show in Dresden Germany.
She has been awarded grants to study and work abroad, including the Ohio Arts
Council exchange program with Dresden.
She received a B.S. in art from the University
of Wisconsin, Madison,
and is currently pursuing an M.F.A. at Kent
State University.
Joki lives and works in Cleveland.
Liz is a great boss
Liz Okuma (pictured left), assistant dean of students and director of
residential citizenship and commuter education, made today’s morning news. She was
recognized on The Morning Show, WKYC Channel 3 News, as a great boss.
WKYC solicited nominations in recognition of National Bosses’ Day, which is today, October 16. Liz was one of three finalists honored on the program.

Get your flu shot/flumist at the Health Center
Beginning today, October 16, flu shots will be available at the Health Center. Cost of the shot is $20. (Students may put this charge on their student bill.) Shots will be given by appointment only, so please call the Health Center at x5418 to make an appointment. Flumist also will be available for those who do not like needles. Flumist can be used only by adults between the ages of 18 and 49 who have no history of asthma or reactive airway disease. The charge for Flumist will be $30.
Free, anonymous HIV testing
Free, anonymous HIV testing will be available in the Health Center on Thursday, October 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Testing will be done by Jim Chillemi from CAN (Community Aids Network). The test is administered by mouth swab. Call the Health Center at x5418 and make your appointment by birth date. Jim will be back the following Thursday, November 2, with test results.
