Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Announced

Judith V. Reppy, Professor of Science and Technology and Associate Director of the Peace Studies Program at Cornell University, will be the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar later this month. Reppy will give a lecture free and open to the public entitled, "Bioterrorism in a Historical Perspective," on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pritchard Room of the Library.

Reppy's lecture addresses the risk of bioterrorist attacks in the virtual absence of historical examples of the use of biological weapons. Reppy is the co-editor and contributing author of The Genesis of New Weapons: Decision Making for Military R&D, The Relations Between Defense and Civic Technologies, and Secrecy and Knowledge Production.

The Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program makes available 13 to 14 distinguished scholars every year. These men and women visit 100 colleges and universities, spending two days at each one, meeting informally with students and faculty members, taking part in classroom discussions, and giving a public lecture open to the entire academic community. The visits are designed primarily for undergraduate participation.

The purpose of the program is to contribute to the intellectual life of the campus by making possible an exchange of ideas between the Visiting Scholars and the resident faculty and students. Participation is limited to the 270 campuses that shelter chapters of Phi Beta Kappa.

The Hiram College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and the Office of the President sponsor Reppy's lecture. For more information, contact Professor John Andrews at AndrewsJTS@hiram.edu or 330-569-5256.

Athletics Update

The week that was in sports was highlighted by many great individual and team accomplishments.  The week started out strong as two terriers were honored by the NCAC for their play last week.  Senior linebacker Mike Erkkila was named Defensive Player of the Week in football while Senior middle hitter Shana Toth (pictured) was named Player of the Week in volleyball. It was also a big week for former Hiram Men’s Basketball player Carlton Dean who signed a professional basketball contract with the Cuyahoga Falls Cougars of the International Basketball League.

The week was not just about individual performances, it was also about two teams that pulled off incredible feats.  While one team was stealing the headlines for ending a 63 game win streak another was making headlines because of how they helped others.  The Volleyball team and the Cross Country teams both did something special this week.  On Friday night in front of a packed house the volleyball team ended Wittenberg’s 63 game regular season win streak over NCAC opponents. A day later both cross country teams took part in the Northeast Ohio Komen Race for a Cure, to help raise money for cancer research.

The men’s soccer team, now 4-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play, played two games last week. They suffered back to back loses last week, falling to the College of Wooster 2-0 and Denison 2-1.  This week the Terriers play two very important conference games as they play host to the Oberlin on October 11th and travel to Earlham on October 15th.

The women’s soccer team, now 2-9-1 and 1-2 in conference play overall, lost both contests last week.  The Terriers opened the week losing to Kenyon 1-0 before closing the week with a loss against Denison 6-0. The Terriers also play two crucial conference games this week on the road as they travel to Ohio Wesleyan on October 12th and Earlham on October 15th.

The volleyball team, now 22-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference, went undefeated last week at they beat Case Western Reserve, Earlham, and Manchester all by the score of 3-0.  The Terriers also ended Wittenberg’s 63 match unbeaten streak in regular season conference play by defeating them 3-1. The Terriers will play just once this week as they travel to the College of Wooster on October 12th.

The football team, now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference, lost to Denison 53-6. They look to rebound this week as they travel to Wittenberg on October 15th.

The cross country teams both took part in the All Ohio Championships over the weekend.  The women finished 20th in the race.  Both teams are back in action this week as they travel to the Lake Erie Invitational on October 13th and then to the College of Wooster on October 14th.
