Learn how to navigate corporate waters
On Tuesday, October 17, Jim Gould, vice president of
internal and external communications for Hartford Financial Services Group, will
give students insider tips about how to advance up the corporate ladder. Gould, who
holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a Master of Fine Arts, will be speaking in the Alumni Heritage Room from 9:40 to 11:40
a.m.
The Hartford is one of the largest investment and insurance companies in the United States with offices in Japan, Brazil, Ireland, and England. Hartford Financial Services Group has almost 30,000 employees and had $2.3 billion in income in 2005. The company ranked 78 on the 2006 Fortune 100 list of U.S.-based companies with the largest annual revenue.
Assistant Professor of Management Arul Thirunavukkarasu (a.k.a. "Dr.
T") arranged for Gould’s
visit as part of his course, Management 301: Marketing Management. The
visit is sponsored by the Hiram College Department of Management, and
the
presentation is open to all members of the Hiram College community.
Photograph exhibit explores HIV in America
Don’t miss the touring photograph and text exhibit titled
“Focus on Living: Portraits of Americans with HIV and AIDS.” The exhibit
currently is on view in the second floor Hinsdale archway
and will be displayed through October 12.
“Focus on Living” showcases 16 Americans living with HIV and AIDS. It is the work of acclaimed photographer/writer Roslyn Banish, author of four books exploring human issues by combining text and photos. The exhibit is based on a book by the same title, Focus on Living (U. Mass Press), with an introduction by Paul A. Volberding, M.D., vice chair of the department of medicine of the University of California, San Francisco.
The subjects of “Focus on Living” speak candidly about their lives, relationships, and how they have come to terms with the presence of a chronic and potentially fatal disease.

Professor Emerita Prudy Hall discovers link between herbicides and damage to crop root systems
Professor Emerita of Biology and Chemistry Prudy Hall (pictured left) is the
co-author of an article recently published in the Journal of
Proteome Research,
vol. 5, no. 9, 2006. The article is titled “Proteomic Analysis of Root
Meristems and the Effects of Acetohydroxyacid Synthase-Inhibiting Herbicides in
the Root of Medicago Truncatula” and is the result of research Hall conducted
while on sabbatical in the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian
National University.
Working with two graduate students, Hall discovered that certain
weed killers have a harmful effect on the root systems of legumes. These
initial studies are a call for farmers to learn about the potential effects of
certain herbicides on crop development. The research team is conducting additional investigations into their findings.
