Personality Profile: Paula Cyphert

Beginning with this edition of The Harbinger, we will profile Hiram College community members to give you the chance to learn more about people you regularly see on campus. Today we introduce you to Paula Cyphert.

Paula is the Lead Cook for Miller Dining Room, a post she’s held since January of 1999. Prior to joining our staff, she spent over 20 years in the food service industry working for various restaurants and country clubs hosting high-profile events such as the LPGA Classic tour. The move to Hiram allowed her to exercise her skills in institutional cooking which is more demanding during peak hours and requires greater turnover of menu options. Paula coordinates recipes, cooking, and cleaning with the help of three full-time cooks, three part-time cooks, and work-study students. She works primarily in Miller Dining Room, but will assist with catering major events hosted at the College.

On May 14, 2005, Paula excused herself from her regular duties preparing food for activities surrounding the College’s commencement exercises in order to take her place among the graduates. “For years I was in the kitchen during commencement, wondering what it was like,” she remembers. Finally on stage accepting her diploma, she describes her feeling as “very humbling.” She completed her degree as a social science major through the Weekend College after transferring credits from Kent State University. “It was an awesome experience,” she says of her time as a Hiram student.

Paula is back to work this summer, preparing meals for the many conferences which utilize the Hiram campus. She also returns with a deeper appreciation for mentoring the staff and students she works with every day. Hiram has instilled in Paula a passion for learning – and teaching – which she wants to use to provide opportunities for others similar to the ones she’s had.

"Someone Is Going to Come" continues this weekend

Tyst is pleased to present their third summer theater production, entitled "Someone is Going to Come" by Jon Fosse through August 7.

The play centers around a couple who have purchased a house, far from other houses, far from everyone. A house where at last they can be alone together, alone with each other. But the woman is obsessed by a strange premonition: What if someone comes? And sure enough, someone does come: the man who sold them the house. An ordinary man... but his presence unleashes hidden jealousy and insecurity that threatens to shatter the couple's relationship.

Tyst, a Cleveland-based performing arts organization specializing in modern Scandinavian performances, is presenting "Someone is Going to Come" as part of a summer-long partnership with Hiram College.  The play is directed by David Vosburgh, who directed Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts" as the opening play in the summer theater series.

Performances will be held in Bates Hall’s Hayden Auditorium on the Hiram College campus at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays through August 7. Ticket prices range between $15 and $20. To order, call 216-771-9118 for individual sales and 330-569-5900 for group sales.
