Tyst presents Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts

Beginning June 9, ghosts will be taking over Bates Hall in Hiram.

Tyst, a Cleveland-based performing arts organization specializing in modern Scandinavian performances, will kick off a summer-long partnership with Hiram College with its presentation of Henrik Ibsen’s controversial play, Ghosts.

Directed by David Vosburgh, Ghosts will run from June 9 through June 26 in Bates Hall on the Hiram College campus. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices range between $15 and $20. To order, call 216-771-9118 for individual sales and 330-569-5900 for group sales.

Ghosts, one of Ibsen’s most controversial plays of its time, is an examination of societal convention by Scandinavia’s greatest playwright. Displaying the devastating results of a woman’s adherence to convention, Ghosts is the story of a woman who is torn between the protection of family secrets and the love of her dying son. At the time of its release, Ghosts was banned from theaters throughout Europe because of the material addressed in the play – dysfunctional marriages, adultery and venereal diseases.

Faculty Focus: Adam Cathcart

Adam Cathcart (history) will be presenting his paper entitled "Building Barriers: Icons of Ascendance and Exclusion in Early Maoist Political Cartoons, 1949-1951" at two conferences in October.  The first will be at the Library of Congress at the International Comic Arts Festival.  The second will be at the University of Buffalo's conference on "Walls and Modern China."

In addition, Cathcart is putting together a panel for next year's American Historical Association's meeting in Philadelphia.  He will be presenting a paper on Korean War songs as part of an interdisciplinary panel on "Music and War," and hopes to create an interdisciplinary class with that title back on campus.
