Dinner/auction to honor Grace and Andy

The Friends of the Chamberlain Family Committee will host a Penne Pasta Dinner honoring Grace Chamberlain and Andy Hopkins, first-year Hiram College students who died in March as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident that also injured their friend and fellow first-year student, Evan DaSilva.

The dinner will be held at the Patrician Party Center, 33150 Lakeland Blvd., Eastlake, OH 44095, on Friday, May 26, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The group is seeking donations for Chinese and silent auctions.

Cost of the non-alcoholic event is $25 per person, with the proceeds to benefit the Chamberlain Fund at National City Bank and a scholarship fund at Hiram College. For more information go to www.gracechamberlain.org or e-mail the group at info@GraceChamberlain.org.

Hannah Good awarded history prize

Hannah Good has won the Robert E. Hall Jr. prize for her paper “Class Segregation, Racial Discrimination, and Depreciation of Property Values: The Case of the 1926 Euclid Zoning Ordinance.” Awarded by the Hiram Historical Society, the Hall prize recognizes outstanding senior seminar papers that deal with local history.

Two submissions by Marty Huehner accepted for 6th Annual National Cup Show

Using a high firing wood fired kiln that he designed and built himself, Marty has recently produced a series of stoneware and porcelain tea bowls. Two of these bowls were entered and accepted into the 6th Annual National Cup Show at Kent State University. The juror, Jason Hess, currently teaches ceramics at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. The show will display Huehner’s pieces along with works of other artists at the Kent Downtown Gallery at 223 North Water Street from May 3 through June 10.  An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. An image of one of Marty’s bowls appears on the mailer advertising the show (below).

To date, Marty’s main body of work has been environmentally inspired. His departure into functional ceramics was motivated by a desire to produce work that engages a more traditional ceramic fine art genre. Marty explains:

“A fine drink of tea is something to be savored and enjoyed; often it may lead to contemplation or daydreaming. My tea bowls are made with the intent to offer the user an aesthetic and joyful accompaniment to the beverage they contain. Texturally, they can provide soothing smoothness or highly engaging topography for the hand to explore and an enjoyable rim to meet the lips. Visually, they invite the eye on a journey over the sometimes barely perceptible undulations of the rim, over varying fields of color, or into the maze of color and elevation contrasts produced by glazes and melted local clays. By offering these finished bowls to the fire of my wood kiln, each one’s irreproducible individualism is further enhanced. These bowls are inspired by the Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetic and suggest the imperfection of natural form and processes.”

Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Kennedy Center project to revitalize our student center for our generation. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The reception (in the Kennedy Center Ballroom) is at 6 p.m., and the dinner and program begin at 7 p.m. in the Dix Dinning Room. Tickets are $50. Of that, $35 will directly benefit the fundraising efforts of the Class of 2006.

SEAC wants your old dormitory furniture for charity
It’s the end of the year again and you're getting all of your stuff together to move out. Don't throw your stuff away, instead give it to SEAC. We'll take anything! Couches, fridges, books, unused notebooks, lamps, futons, carpets, plus almost anything else you can think of! If you dump it into the new large items dumpster (located behind your residence hall) we'll take it!
We're not really pack rats; your donation will be sold at the beginning of next year for the annual SEAC SALE!
All of the proceeds go to a charity. So don't rush this summer to buy some carpet, just wait till the beginning of next year and we'll have plenty!
If you don't want to drag it to the dumpster, contact us via e-mail at SEAC@hiram.edu, and we'll contact you about picking up your donation. Donations will be accepted throughout the week, at least until the day before graduation (Friday May 12th).
