Poet Mary Quade to be honored

Poet Mary Quade, adjunct member of the Hiram College English department, will be among 26 Ohio writers honored June 3 at the Bolton Theatre in Cleveland.

Quade’s work will be turned into a dramatic presentation by a celebrity artist during the sixth biennial Writers & Their Friends literary gala.

“I’m imagining the local television weatherman reading one of my poems,” Quade wrote in an e-mail to Professor of English Joyce Dyer, who also is the College’s director of writing.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Quade will be a visiting professor of English at Hiram. Her work has been published in such journals as Black Warrior Review, Colorado Review, Columbia, Crab Orchard Review, Field, Fine Madness, Iowa review, Massachusetts Review, Mid-American Review, and River Styx.

The Writers & Their Friends event will begin at 7 p.m. with “The Browse,” a time when friends can browse book tables and visit with editors, publishers, and authors. Celebrity artists will present the work of Quade and other featured writers at 8 p.m., and a party will follow at 10 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for guest seating, $50 for preferred, and $100 for VIP. More information is available by calling 216.421.0403. Tickets may be purchased online at www.pwlgc.com/wandf.html.

Writers & Their Friends is supported by the Ohio Arts Council, Cleveland Public Library, Cyrus Eaton Foundation, Target, and the Cuyahoga County Public Library.

Liz Okuma heads college housing group

Hiram College’s Liz Okuma, assistant dean of students and director of residential, citizenship, and commuter education, has assumed the presidency of the Northeast Ohio Housing Officers (NEOHO).

NEOHO is a professional development organization, providing those who work in residence life at Northeast Ohio colleges and universities an opportunity to “exchange ideas and resources, network within the region, and promote ethical decision-making within housing and residence life.”

Okuma will organize and run three meetings of the group during her year as president.

“The job,” Okuma noted, “has come back home to Hiram.”

Mike Corr, Hiram associate dean of students and director of security, is one of the three founders of NEOHO.

Celebrating Excellence at Hiram

"Spring is the season when we traditionally celebrate success. There are many award ceremonies and presentations. Some recognize leadership, involvement and athletic achievement. Academic performance is recognized at the departmental level, and campus-wide at the annual Honors Recognition Program. Honoring student achievement reflects the behaviors we value at Hiram College and provides opportunity for us to celebrate together as a community. This is the second year that Hiram College Honors Recognition Program is part of a larger two- day “Celebrating Excellence at Hiram” event. Celebrating Excellence begins on Sunday April 30th with the Excellence in Leadership and Involvement Award Ceremony.

Celebrating Excellence continues on Monday, May 1, with afternoon receptions and award ceremony hosted by individual academic departments (classes will end at 4:00 p.m.). The College will host a special dinner that evening in honor of Alpha Society members. The dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Dix Dining Hall. Following dinner, Alpha Society members and their guests are invited to attend Hiram’s annual Honors Recognition Program in Hayden Auditorium which begins at 6:30 p.m. The honors program will announce inductees into Phi Beta Kappa (a separate induction ceremony will take place on the day of Commencement), several distinguished achievement awards including the Dively, Reichle, Yuksel Ismail Prize, and Outstanding Student Service Award, and the tapping of Omicron Delta Kappa inductees. An all-campus dessert reception on the Martin Common will follow the program at 7:30 p.m. The honors celebration will conclude with the music department Spring Honors Recital in Hayden Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. Students and guests are welcome to attend all of these events.

Encyclopedia of the Blues accepts two articles

Professor of Music Tina Dreisbach and librarian Jeff Wanser have each contributed two biographical articles for the recently published Encyclopedia of the Blues Assistant  (Routledge Press, 2006). This new two-volume reference work contains 2,100 articles by 140 authors, encompassing all aspects of blues music and related genres, including history, styles, performers, and the music industry. Dreisbach provided entries for Gladys Bentley, blues singer and pianist active in Harlem in the 1920s, and Vivian Carter, co-founder of Vee-Jay Records, prominent blues and rhythm and blues label in the 1950s.  Wanser wrote entries for Panama Francis, swing and rhythm and blues drummer, and Joe Liggins, West Coast R&B singer/pianist prominent in the decade after World War II.

Hiram graduate student submits photo for the Villager

Mialie Szymanski, a graduate student attending Hiram’s MAIS program, submitted an Easter photograph of some crocus flowers to the Villager, a weekly newspaper based in Garrettsville. The photograph appeared on the Villager’s front-page, April 14, 2006, Easter edition. Szymanski submitted the photograph because it represents the three traditional Easter colors, white, purple, and yellow. The photograph was taken at her parent’s home in Newton Falls.
