Student Senate fills leadership roles

Meghan Urbon, Student Senate president for 2006-07, and Julie Kocka, vice president for administration, have appointed Student Senate officers who have been approved by the Senate.

Joining Urbon (rising senior/Akron, Ohio) and Kocka (senior/Strongsville, Ohio) will be:

•    Will Dahlberg (senior/Newbury, Vermont) – Secretary
•    Joe Gaither (senior/Dunedin, Florida) – Vice President of Activities
•    Jared Drummer (junior/Dayton, Ohio) – Vice President of Finance

This is believed to be the first time in College history that the top two elected officers are women, according to outgoing Student Senate President Brad Cromes.

Daniel Brown’s writing wins regional competition

Hiram College’s Daniel Brown has won the fiction writing category of East Central College’s Fifteenth Annual Student Literary Competition. His winning entry was “The Anniversary Pig.” Brown also received an honorable mention in poetry for “Celluloid Touch.”

Dominic Blanc’s “Family Reunion” gave Hiram a sweep of the top two places in fiction.

There were 172 entries from Bethany, Heidelberg, Mount Union, Muskingum, Otterbein, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Hiram Colleges.

Winners and honorable mention entries will be published in the “2006 ECC Literary Anthology,” and the winning manuscripts also will be submitted for consideration in “Confluence,” the literary journal published by the Ohio Valley Literary Group and Marietta College.

Friend families sought

Hiram College’s international students both learn from and educate those with whom they associate during their days as part of the College community. One of the forms this exchange takes is the Friendly Family Program of the Office of International Student Services.

“This opportunity,” International Students Services Coordinator Taryn Kohler wrote in a campus e-mail, “provides immeasurable benefits for students and families alike.”

Office of International Student Services will host a Friendly Family Program interest meeting on Thursday, April 20, at 4 p.m., in the Kennedy Center Student Lounge. The Friendly Family Program extends the support system for new international students beyond the Hiram campus.

For more information or to RSVP for the interest meeting, contact Kohler at 330.569.5388 or kohlertm@hiram.edu.
