Martha Stewart Coming to Hiram

Domestic diva Martha Stewart, former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Multimedia, will speak at Hiram College on Wednesday, April 5 as part of the institution’s Creating An Ethical Business World Speaker Series. Stewart will give her speech entitled “Ethics in the Business World?  Don't Make Me Laugh!” at 7 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Ballroom.

Stewart recently finished a five-month stint in the federal slammer.  The root of Stewart's troubles stems from her late 2001 sale of ImClone Systems stock right before shares in the small biotechnology company tumbled. While Stewart, a billionaire, turned only a small profit from the sale, it destroyed her and the lifestyle media and merchandising company she built.

The speech is sponsored by Hiram's Center for the Study of Ethical Studies.  "We're thrilled to have Ms. Stewart kick off our lecture series," said Ken Alpern, Director of the Center for the Study of Ethical Issues.  "We hope this lecture helps to clear her name and turn the page for an outstanding, ethical person."  Alpern also announced that Ken Lay and Bernie Ebbers will appear as part of the lecture series.

Martha Stewart's lecture is free and open to the public.

Student Life Lowers Drinking Age

Eric Riedel, Dean of Students, announced at the Board of Trustees meeting yesterday that Hiram College has lowered the drinking age on campus to 18.  The rule applies to all residence halls, academic buildings, and any other college-owned facility.  "Hiram students have shown themselves to be remarkably responsible in their alcohol consumption," Riedel said at the meeting.  "We just wanted to reward them for good behavior."  He went to explain that the drinking age was 18 when he was in college, and he turned out just fine.

The rule change is in effect immediately.  For questions about the policy, please call the Student Life office at (330) 569-5233

AC/DC to Perform

An ensemble of traditional heavy metal rockers will present a concert in Frohring Recital Hall on Friday, 15, at 7:30 p.m.  The group AC/DC (pictured) includes performers Angus Young, electric guitar; Brian Johnson, vocals; and Malcolm Young, guitar.

Heavy metal, the classical music of troubled adolescent teens, is one of the world’s most vibrant and complex repertories.  Young began formal training on the ancient electric guitar at the age of five and continues to learn and explore the depths of his instrument.  His accompanists will demonstrate the art of percussion on the double-headed drum and smashing guitars into speakers.

The free concert is sponsored by the Hiram Community Trust and the Hiram College Music Department.  Call 330-569-5294 for further information.
