Lecture and Reception in honor of Prudence Hall’s Retirement
Please
join the Biology Department on Monday, April 4th for a reception and
lecture to celebrate the retirement of Prudy Hall, who has been an
integral part of the Biology Department since joining the Hiram College
Faculty in 1988. The reception will start at 4:00 p.m. in the
Pritchard Room with a lecture following at 4:45 p.m. in Prudy’s honor.
The title of the lecture is "From Photochemistry to Vitamin B6: How a
Career Battling Plant Disease Leads in Unexpected Directions." The
speaker, Margo Daub, is Prudy’s friend and professional colleague.
Daub is Professor of Plant Pathology and Chair of the Department of
Botany at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Everyone is
invited.
National Student Employment Week
Each
year colleges and universities across the nation recognize their
student employees by participating in National Student Employment
Week. This year's nationwide event will be held April 4-8.
During
this week, departments are encouraged to show their appreciation for
all that the student employees do throughout the year. Departments may
recognize a student employee for outstanding performance by nominating
him or her for the Hiram College Student Employee of the Year Award.
Federal work study and non-work study student employees are eligible.
Three students will be recognized campus-wide. There will be prizes
given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places sponsored by the Hiram College
Financial Aid Office, The Admission Office and the Bookstore. Those
students chosen as outstanding employees will be announced on Friday,
April 8.
The nomination forms will be evaluated by
representatives from Hiram College departments that do not employ
students. Nomination forms must be received in the Human Resources
Office by Friday, April 1, by 5 p.m. For more information, please call

ANWR Film on Campus
SEAC
(Student Environmental Action Coalition) is sponsoring a film this
month about the Artic National Wildlife Preserve. "Oil on Ice"
addresses the possible problems that the wildlife of the refuge could
face if it were opened up to oil drilling. The film will be shown on
Monday, March 28 at 5 pm in Frohring Art 5. Refreshments will be

Damaris Peters Pike Seminar Room Dedication
The
Music Department will host a reception to dedicate the new Damaris
Peters Pike Seminar Room on Thursday, March 31, from 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Damaris, Emerita Professor of Music, and her husband Ken Pike provided
funds for refurbishment of Frohring Music 203 as a classroom and vocal
studio with new flooring, paint, lighting, furniture, and sound
system. There is also a wall display of historic photos of music
faculty and ensembles. Please drop by on Thursday to greet Damaris and
see the new space.
Hyden, Parkinson Attend Conference
Junior
Amberly Hyden will be presenting a paper, "'The Sovereign Principle of
Life': Images of Blood in Baumgartner's Bombay", at the 20th Annual
National Undergraduate Literature Conference in Ogden, Utah, at the end
of the month. Amberly is majoring in English with a Creative Writing
Emphasis and wrote the paper for ENGL 438: Visions of India. Kirsten
Parkinson will be accompanying Amberly to the conference and chairing a
panel there.
Alaolmolki to present talk at Akron Council on World Affairs
Professor
of Political Science Nozar Alaolmolki will present his essay, “Saudi
Arabia since the September 11th Terrorist Attacks,” for the Akron
Council on World Affairs (ACWA) dinner on April 7, 2005. The program
and dinner is part of the John and Betty Seiberling ACWA 2004-2005
Program Series. Alaolmolki’s talk will analyze the development of
democracy in Saudi Arabia in light of low voter registration and
increasing terrorism. Dinner begins at 6:45 p.m. and the talk begins at
7:30 p.m. at the Hilton Inn in Fairlawn. Reservations for the program

Opera/Musical Theater Workshop to perform Irving Berlin
The
Hiram Opera/Musical Theatre Workshop will perform "Irving Berlin - A
Musical Revue." The show will present the music and life of the
legendary song and Broadway composer.
The cast includes Robin Behlow, Bradley Cromes, Charity Jean, Thomas Kindt, Daniel Klinzing and Isabelle Tuma.
Performances
are Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1 at 8:00 p.m. in Frohring
Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

The cold, rainy, weather last week kept the Terriers to a limited competition schedule outdoors. Several games were postponed or canceled.
The women’s tennis team hosted Geneva College (L 8-1) and Ursuline College (W 7-2) last week. Head coach Pete Brann got to see a lot of tennis at the Ursuline match as it lasted nearly six and a half hours, the second longest match in Brann’s 34 years of coaching at Hiram. The women travel to Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday and to Kenyon College on Thursday.
The men’s tennis team did not compete last week. The Terriers host Case Western Reserve on Tuesday and Kenyon on Thursday, then travel to Wooster on Saturday.
The golf teams did not compete last week. The women’s team hosts Notre Dame College on Wednesday in its first match of the year. The men travel to Kenyon College on Saturday and Sunday for their season-opening tournament.
The track & field teams did not compete last week. The outdoor schedule begins this weekend with a meet at Westminster College (PA) on Saturday.
The baseball team played at Thiel on Thursday (L 10-3). Games with Kenyon College were postponed and will be rescheduled. The men are scheduled to play at Westminster on Tuesday and at Allegheny on Saturday and Sunday.
The softball team played at Mt. Union on Thursday (L 9-1). The women host Thiel on Tuesday and Ursuline on Thursday, then travel to Westminster for a game on Saturday.
