Intercultural Forum Hosts Annual Dinner and Talent Show
The Hiram College Intercultural Forum (IF) will hold their annual Dinner and Talent Show this Saturday, February 5th. A celebration of diversity and intercultural harmony, this family-oriented event has become very popular in and around the Hiram community since its inception several years ago. There will be food in abundance from countries all over the world as well as performances in music, poetry, and dance.

For weeks, students have been busy planning and preparing the meals and performances for this unique event. Tickets are $5 for students plus a meal swipe, and $10 for everyone else (tickets for children under 5 are $5). The event will start Saturday evening at 5 pm in the Kennedy Center. Student Spotlight
Last weekend Hiram's Residential Education Staff went to the
Northeast Ohio Housing Officers RA Drive-In Workshop at Mount Union
College. Several staff members presented programs at the workshop,
including:
- Say Sex Six Times Fast -- A Crash Course in Interactive Sexual Education Programming, presented by Daniel Brown, Mo Muckinhaupt, Andrea Mastrobuono, and Tim Cherney
- Creating Safe Spaces, presented by Andrea Mastrobuono, Daniel Brown, and Hannah Nutt
- Something FISH-y -- Discovering the FISH Philosophy in Res Life, presented by Adam Jones and Chrissy Sofranko
- Mission Possible! -- Discovering the Possibilities of a Career in Residential Education, presented by Jenn Allen and Jeff Moore
- Secret Agent Man -- How To Become An Expert Team Builder, presented by Matthew Wunderle and Tim Cherney
Athletics Update
Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving
The
men beat Washington & Jefferson College (PA) on Saturday 116-103,
winning all but one event on the day. The women lost 115-99, without
diver Megan Prunty. Seniors Kim Durst, Brenda Yama, Zach Huggins and
John Wells were honored as part of the senior recognition ceremony held
near the end of the meet. The Terriers are finished with their
regular-season competition and will compete next at the NCAC
Championship meet held in Canton, Ohio, on February 10-12.
Men’s and Women’s Track & Field
The women placed 5th of nine teams in the NCAC Relays on Saturday, with two first-place finishes, while the men’s team placed 9th of ten teams. The women’s 4x200 meter relay of Jasmine Kirtley, Lauren Sturdivant, Lynne Hutchison, and Gwen Alger were named NCAC Players of the Week in Indoor Track-Sprints/Hurdles. The Terriers return to action on Friday at Case Western Reserve University in a meet scheduled to start at 6PM.
Women’s Basketball
The women, now 6-12 overall and 1-9 in NCAC play, lost to Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan, and Denison last week. The Terriers travel to Wooster Tuesday for a 7:30PM game, then hit the road for an overnight this weekend against Earlham on Friday at 6PM and Wittenberg on Saturday at 2PM.
Men’s Basketball
The men, now 3-16 overall and 2-8 in the NCAC, lost to Wittenberg,
got stuck in traffic for five hours before losing to Kenyon at
midnight, and lost to Ohio Wesleyan last week. Up next are Allegheny
College (PA) at home on Wednesday at 7:30PM and Wittenberg on the road
on Saturday at 3PM.
Hiram hosts Salon event for students
Dr.
Julian Earls, Director of NASA Glenn Research, spoke to a small group
of students and faculty for Hiram’s inaugural Salon on Sunday, January
30th. This new series will bring notable figures from a variety of
disciplines to campus for informal, one-on-one interaction with
students. Dr. Earls made a few brief remarks on a number of topics
ranging from his administration of the Cleveland-based space research
center with an annual budget of $773 million to his personal commitment
to promoting healthy lifestyles. Guests were then invited to interact
with Dr. Earls individually during the reception on 3rd Hinsdale.
“I met with a number of bright, young students tonight who are
destined to do great things,” said Dr. Earls. “I was very pleased to be
your featured speaker for this event.”
Artist in Residence to deliver February 8 convocation
Potter
Mary Louise Carter will deliver a convocation talk on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Carter, who will work as an artist-in-residence at Hiram the week of
Feb. 7, has been a potter for more than 30 years. The title of her
address is "The Cup, the Bowl, and Beyond: Finding My Way in Ceramic
Art." Her talk is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Center
Ballroom.
Carter teaches ceramics and design at Louisiana Tech University
where she holds the title of the Lyles Endowed Professorship in
Ceramics. She previously served as the resident potter at the Vermont
State Craft Center in Middlebury, Vermont, and has taught at Penn State
University. Her porcelain ceramics have been exhibited in numerous
juried and invitational shows throughout the United States. Carter
earned her B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and her M.F.A.
from the New York State College of Ceramics.
In addition to her convocation presentation, Carter will
demonstrate techniques of making porcelain vessels by working in a
demonstration/teaching studio in the Frohring Art Building. Her
appearance at Hiram is made possible support from the Hiram Community
Trust.
Drumplay to conduct workshop, perform in concert
The
improvisational percussion ensemble Drumplay will perform at Hiram
College on February 8 as part of the Black History Month celebration.
The group's music is inspired by Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Middle
Eastern rhythms.
Drumplay will conduct an educational workshop on Feb. 8 from 3 to 4
p.m. in Frohring 102. A concert is scheduled for 7 p.m., also in
Frohring 102.
"While we honor the elder master drummers, we strive to create our
own unique voice in the vast universe of percussive sounds," says
Drumplay founder James Onysko.
Drumplay has performed concerts throughout Northeast Ohio. In 1996,
the ensemble performed with Arthur Hull and D'Cuckoo before an
estimated audience of 500,000 people as part of the Cleveland
Bicentennial Festival.
The workshop and concert are free and open to the public.
Special Election in Hiram Community February 8th
Students
and staff who are registered to vote in the Hiram and Mantua areas are
reminded about the special election next Tuesday, February 8. The
Crestwood School District has an emergency levy for 6.98 mills on the
ballot. For more information about this issue, voters can go to the
Crestwood School District web site at http://crestwood.sparcc.org
or attend an informational session at 7 pm this Thursday, February 3 at
the home of Jo Walsh-Cobb in Hiram (6760 Hinsdale St., down the street
from the health center).

Resident Hall Director
Hiram College is seeking applications for the position of Resident
Hall Director. This is a full time 10 month, live-in professional staff
position. This position requires active involvement in a small college
environment. Responsibilities include the overall management of a
residential complex of 100-300 students, supervision or co-supervision
of 8-13 resident assistants, and coordinating comprehensive programming
efforts.
