Get it in writing: Hiram U.S.A.
Literary descriptions written across the eras can lend enormous insight into the flavor and character of a place over time. Samplings of written words by those who walked our trails or ambled along our sidewalks before we did can provide a provocative sense of history and engage our imagination.
Such is the nature of Hiram, U.S.A., a collection of 28 essays written about Hiram, by Hiram students, between 1991 and 2006. The writings that make up Hiram U.S.A. were edited by 15 current Hiram students for their course in professional editing. The book is the first volume of the Lindsey-Crane Book Series, a sequence presented by the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature, and devoted to literary responses rooted in the experience of Hiram College.
Subjects range from metaphors about local flower gardens to descriptions of the resting places of the authors’ student predecessors. The editors checked into the facts surrounding the essays and looked up related photos in the Hiram Archives before making all the decisions about the layout and design of the collection. The result is a book filled with literary explorations of Hiram’s buildings, cemeteries, gardens – even the old telescope that connects Hiram with the heavens and the universe and even the faces of professors.
There will be a reception and reading of the essays on Friday, December 7, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hiram College Library. Champagne and dessert will be served while contributors read excerpts from their essays.
There is no charge. Everyone is invited, so please join us! RSVP at alumnirel@hiram.edu or 800.705.5050.
Alissa L. Shuster receives ASCAP Award
Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor in Flute Alissa L. Shuster received an American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) award in support of her upcoming endeavors.
According to the ASCAP Web site, in New York on October 23, 2007, approximately $2.6 million in cash awards for 2007 through 2008 has been made to writer members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) by the Society’s ASCAPlus Awards Panels. The purpose of these special awards, which have been given each year since 1960, is to reward writers whose works have a unique prestige value for which adequate compensation would not otherwise be received, and to compensate those writers whose works are performed substantially in media not surveyed by ASCAP. Since 1960, the unique ASCAPlus Awards program has provided deserving music creators with something meaningful and tangible in the form of recognition and money.
Alissa’s award is dependent on the upcoming University of Pennsylvania commission she has for the spring of 2008 for a program titled, “The Winds of War,” in which she is writing a piece (“Everything is Different in the Dark...”) that reflects her impressions and reactions about the war in Iraq. Also, in her application for the award she stated that she is collaborating with Marty Huehner, adjunct professor/director of the Creative Field Studies Program, on a composition/visual art project for an upcoming Creative Field Studies Exhibition (“The Shore”).
This is Alissa’s seventh ASCAP award.
Hiram College Madrigal Singers set Yuletide Revels performances
The Hiram College Madrigal Singers will open their annual “Yuletide Revels,” a vibrant recreation of the renaissance Christmas festivals of the Elizabethan period, with evening performances on December 7 and 8 and a brunch performance December 9 in the Hiram College Kennedy Center Ballroom. The group will give three theatrical performances and an English recreation of “Yuletide” celebrations, complete with the rich and colorful clothing of the times. Each performance follows a buffet.
The Madrigal Singers are a part of an annual event now running 39 years for which students audition at the beginning of the school year. While well known in Northeast Ohio, the singers and their conductor, John Drotleff, also tour the United States giving vocal and chamber music ensemble performances. They have recently performed in New York, Boston, and Chicago, and will travel the country more in the spring.
For the performances on December 7 and 8, dinner begins at 6:15 p.m., with Revels at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, December 9, the Revels begin at 1:30 p.m., following a 12:15 p.m. brunch.
Evening tickets for both dinner and the Revels are $37.50 per person. Evening admission for the Revels only is $15 per person. Brunch admission is $30.00 a person, and for Revels only is $12.00 each.
Group rates are available. Ten or more evening tickets are $35 each, or $33 per person for groups of 20 or more. Ten or more brunch and Revels tickets are $28 each. Groups of 20 or more pay $26 per ticket for both brunch and the performance.

SPECIAL NOTE: Free Performance of the Yuletide Revels on Wednesday
Hiram students may attend the 39th annual production of the Yuletide Revels for free on Wednesday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Ballroom. Tickets are required; you can get them from a cast member, in the music department office, or at the Welcome Center. The Yuletide Revels is a musical and dramatic reenactment of a Christmas celebration of the nobility in Elizabethan England and includes both music that reflects the religious traditions of that period and secular music related to a feast. You will enjoy your fellow students who are herald trumpeters, recorder players, harpists, jesters, and singers all attired in lavish costumes of the period. Spend an hour in the Renaissance! It’s a great break from realities of the 21st century.
Other performances include President’s Night on Thursday – a performance for more than 185 invited guests of the College – and public performances the rest of the week. For those who wish to attend one of the public performances, tickets are available for Friday, Saturday dinners, and Sunday’s brunch performance. Evening performances cost $37.50 per person for dinner (6:15 p.m.) and Revels (7:30 p.m.) or $15.00 just for the Revels. Brunch on Sunday is $30.00 per person for brunch (12:15 p.m.) and Revels (1:30 p.m.), or $12.00 just for the Revels.
