Hiram College Madrigal Singers Present Yuletide Revels 2007

Hiram College's Madrigal singers will start their 39th Year of Public Performances on December 5 - 9, 2007. The Yuletide Revels is a musical and dramatic reenactment of a Christmas celebration of the nobility in Elizabethan England and includes both music that reflects the religious traditions of that period and secular music related to a feast.

Hiram's Madrigal singers offer an evening buffet or a midday brunch with live music of the holiday season provided by Hiram students.  After the meal you will be entertained by singers, trumpeters, recorder players, a harpist, and, of course, “Pun” the jester, all attired in lavish costumes of the period.

The buffet includes Hiram’s prime rib and an array of other entrees, salads, and desserts. The brunch features glazed ham, chicken hunter style, egg strata, potato pancakes, and an assortment of salads and desserts.

Brunch 12:15 p.m.
Revels 1:30 p.m.

Brunch and Revels - $30.00 per person
Revels only - $12.00 per person

Seating for the Revels is open with guests being admitted to the Revels in groups of 40 according to ticket number. Get the best seat for the production by making your reservation soon.

Associate Professor of Physics Mark Taylor and students publish articles

Associate Professor of Physics Mark Taylor has recently published two articles with Hiram College student coauthors. The first article, reporting work done in

Mark Taylor

collaboration with Greg Petersen ('07), is titled Solvation potentials for flexible chainmolecules in solution: On the validity of a pair-wise decomposition and appears in the most recent issue of

The Journal of Chemical Physics (vol. 127, article 184901). The second article, coauthored with Sayuri Ichida ('06), is titled Conformation of a polymer chain in explicit solvent: A solvation potential approach and appears in the most recent issue of the Journal of

Polymer Science, Part B: Polymer Physics (vol. 45, pp. 3319-3326). These two articles both address the topic of the conformation or shape of a long chain molecule in solution. Chain conformation is an important factor controlling both the physical properties of polymeric materials and the functionality of biopolymers. The recent work of Taylor and his students (funded by the Petroleum Research Fund) has focused on developing a theoretical understanding of the coupling between the conformation of a polymer chain and the local structure the chain's solvent environment. Funky Winkerbean comic strip creator Tom Batiuk to speak at book signing

Come hear Funky Winkerbean comic strip creator Tom Batiuk talk about one of Funky’s friends, Lisa, who battled breast cancer

When: Thursday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Kennedy Center Ballroom
What: Convocation followed by dessert reception and book-signing

This is the final event in the series Stages: Cancer and the Arts—a series designed to invoke discussion about cancer as portrayed in the arts and literature. This series is presented by Hiram College’s Center for Literature, Medicine, and Biomedical Humanities.

Photographer Marc Golub, whose show "Cancer Speaks" is on exhibit in the Kennedy Center Gallery, will also be present Thursday night to talk to audience.

Meet the artist Lynn Saville at the Gelbke

On Wednesday, November 28, at 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., photographer Lynn Saville will have a reception at the Gelbke Fine Arts Center and will give an artist’s talk in the gallery at 6 p.m. Saville, a noted New York Photographer, is currently exhibiting a collection of photographs at the Gelbke.  The exhibition, titled "Night/Shift," will remain through December 18 and features the Saville's signature color and black-and-white photographs of urban and rural settings enveloped in veils of darkness.

Saville explains that her work explores, “The paradox that cities are populated by and built for crowds, but only truly inhabited by individuals.”  While cities can be places associated with anonymity, Saville reveals that “Only when we bring the traffic of our dreams to a darkening city do we make it ours.”

For more information, please call the Hiram College Art Department at 330-569-5304. The Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
