Poet Jim Daniels will visit Hiram College to discuss his work

 

Jin Daniels Poet Jim Daniels, the Baker Professor of English and director of the creative writing program at Carnegie Mellon University, will discuss his work during on Thursday, October 18, at noon in the Alumni-Heritage Room of Teachout-Price Hall. The convocation is sponsored by the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature, one of Hiram’s six Centers of Excellence.

The Daniels convocation is the first of three Lindsay-Crane Center events this fall. Novelist Clyde Edgerton will visit Hiram to speak on November 15, and Hiram U.S.A., a book of essays about Hiram written and edited by Hiram College students, will be unveiled on December 7 at a dessert reception and reading.

Daniels is the author of eight books of poetry, including Show and Tell: New and Selected Poems (University of Wisconsin Press, 2003). His new collections, Revolt of the Crash-Test Dummies (Eastern Washington University Press), winner of the Blue Lynx Prize for Poetry, and In Line for the Exterminator (Wayne State University) have recently been published.

Also a writer of short fiction, Daniels’ Detroit Tales (Michigan State University Press, 2003) received a bronze medal in the ForeWord Book of the Year awards. A new collection of his short stories, Mr. Pleasant (Michigan State University Press) was published in September.

Daniels is also screenwriter and has collaborated with photographer Charlee Brodsky on a book of poems and photographs titled Street (Bottom Dog Press, 2005). His 2006 feature film, Dumpster, was selected for a dozen film festivals.

Daniel’s many awards include the Brittingham Prize for Poetry, two fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, and two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His poems have appeared in the Pushcart Prize and Best American Poetry anthologies.

 

Slingerland gave talk at Wooster College

Professor Dixon Slingerland (religious studies) lectured recently before a large audience at the College of Wooster. Speaking on “The Prophet Amos: How Not to Win a Popularity Contest (and Nearly Get Yourself Killed in the Process),” he addressed Wooster’s 39th Annual Lay Academy of Religion and this year’s theme, “Across the Millennia: Hearing the Voices of the Prophets.”

 

 


Cell tower to be finished by month's end

Gemini Development Group Inc.,said Hiram's cell tower construction should be finished by the end of October. Monroe wrote, The underground electrical has been installed and inspected. The compound has been cut out, the meter base is installed and we are scheduled to drill the tower caissons on Tuesday the 16th. We will then let the concrete cure for 7 days and then have the tower delivered and stacked.  The site will be operational by month’s end.


 

Creative Space Exhibition at Gelbke Fine Art Gallery

                                                                                                                     The Gelbke Art Gallery will present an exhibition of artwork by Hiram students exploring the theme of “space” beginning on Thursday, October 16, and run through November 7. The works of arts were inspired by the student's visit to Florence, Italy, in the spring of 2007.

At reception will be held at Gelbke on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Refreshments will be served. The participating Hiram students are Christina Bell, Adam Hardwick, Rickie Sabatini, Brittany Wildman, Charlie Eppley, Laura Mateo, Raechelle Speaker, Michele Zychowski, Charlie Fremont, Mason Milani, and Kristy Walter.

 

Volunteers needed for the Make-a-Difference Day Food Drive

Vans will leave the Kennedy Center on Saturday, October 27, at 9 a.m. and at 11 a.m. to collect food at the Giant Eagle in Garrettsville Volunteers may also assist in food collection at the United Way food collection site in Ravenna. Vans leave the Kennedy Center for the Ravenna location at both 8 a.m. and noon. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Jason Bricker-Thompson at 330.569.6094.



Brian Watkins named Ohio Bachelor-of-the-Year

Brian Watkins, 23, a biochemistry major and Hiram College graduate '06, has been named Ohio Bachelor of the Year by Cosmopolitan Magazine. Watkins, from Kent, was nominated by his sister who stated, Brian is intelligent and has a big heart. He is there for me when I need him. Flu Shots: one day left

The Hiram College Health Center is offering flu shots for $20 on Thursday, October 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Health Center is located at 6780 Hinsdale St. Cash or personal check will be accepted, but health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid cannot be billed for this service.

Hiram Ghost Walk returns this weekend

ghost.jpg On Saturday, October 27, Hiram will take part in Halloween festivities by presenting another Ghost Walk. Participants in Ghost Walk will meet under the Hinsdale Arch at 6 p.m. Trick-or-treaters will be guided on tours to visit various locations throughout Hiram where they will be treated to ghost stories and candy.

Brianna McCartney is managing Ghost Walk and is looking for more volunteers to hand out candy, to escort groups along the Ghost Walk, and to tell ghost stories about historic Hiram. Come learn about the little-girl ghost known to haunt Bowler Hall or the spirits seen in Garfields former home on Hinsdale Street.

United Way of Portage County plans tailgate party at Hiram

 

Unitered+united way.jpgd Way of Portage County will kick off this years campaign with a tailgate party at the Coleman Sports Center on Monday, October 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A $10 donation per person will provide BBQ ribs, pizza, quesadilla, mini reuben sandwiches, and other refreshments plus musical entertainment and a silent auction.
