Gelbke Fine Arts Center and Gallery celebrates grand opening
The Gelbke Fine Arts Center and Gallery will celebrate its grand opening with a series of lectures, workshops, and exhibits. This celebration begins on January 22 with artist Hui-Chu Ying presenting a workshop on silk screening.
Prayers includes the new interactive piece, Give & Share.
January 22 – February 29, 2008
Artist workshop:
Tuesday, January 22, 1 – 5 p.m.
Location: Gelbke Fine Arts Center
Artist Hui-Chu Ying will demonstrate silk screen printing techniques and collaborate with students in the creation of a large-scale mural on the interior of the new art building. The public is invited to stop by and watch the piece unfold - and even lend a hand!
Hui-Chu Ying uses her artistic interests to address the challenges of war, disasters, illness, intolerance, and loss. Marshalling a variety of media such as painting, drawing, etching, screen-printing, and collage, she creates large-scale installations that offer a space for meditation and communication. Hui-Chu is an associate professor of art at the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art.
We learn to nurture and embrace one another, to cope with the loss of loved ones, and to endure obstacles. The best medicine for healing the wounds that life throws at us is the offer of hope and courage. Helping one another to develop empathy, tolerance, patience, and humility is one of life’s greatest gifts.

(Taken from a January 8, 2008, e-mail from President Tom Chema)
Dear Faculty and Staff:

Kathy Feather |
Many of you have expressed an interest in gathering with the College for the tribute event for Kathy Feather in January, which has now been planned for January 24, 2008. You are invited to join in the remembrance and celebration of Kathy beginning with a formal program from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Following the tribute, please join us for a bread & soup meal, a casual and traditional Hiram weekly winter gathering that Kathy so often attended and enjoyed with friends and family. All events will take place in the Hiram College Kennedy Center.
It is our hope that stories of Kathy will be shared throughout the evening both formally during the tribute and informally at the community meal. If you are unable to participate in person, you are invited to offer your own story about Kathy. Selected stories that are received by January 15 will be read during the tribute, and all stories will be collected and shared in print that evening. Stories received after January 15 will be saved for a larger collection that will be printed and bound later in the spring.
If you are interested in sharing a story about Kathy, please forward it as follows:

her name. During a special awards dinner last month, Lisko received the Service Excellence Club Award from Huntington Bank. The award recognizes bank associates who perform above and beyond the very high standards set for serving customers. The Service Excellence Club Award is the most prestigious non-sales award that the bank bestows. Frank Hierro, president of Huntington’s Mahoning Valley region, nominated Lisko for the honor.
Lisko graduated from WEC magna cum laude in 2007 with a major in business management.
Lisko attributed her ability to excel in her field to her training at Hiram. “The qualities were always there, and Hiram gave me the strength and the tools to grow in the business. The degree gives me the security to make it in a world of mergers,” she said. Plus, the program’s convenient format allows students like Lisko to continue to advance their careers and participate in community organizations while completing their degrees.
