Virginia M. (Jimmy) Buchanan, Ph.D.

Professor of Mathematics, Chair

Virginia Matthews “Jimmy” Buchanan is a Professor of Mathematics who specializes in point set topology, real analysis, and the history of mathematics. She is a native of the Mississippi Delta and held faculty positions in Texas and Virginia before coming to Hiram. She is actively involved at the national level with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and currently serves as the Chair of the MAA Council on Meetings and Professional Development. An avid reader, she also serves on the Editorial Board of the MAA’s Spectrum book series. Dr. Buchanan enjoys the variety of teaching many different courses and finds it impossible narrow the list to only a few favorites.

Research Interests

The history of mathematics is a fascinating subject with seemingly endless possible avenues for research and study. Dr. Buchanan’s current historical focus is on the mathematics of early civilizations in India and China. She also is interested in pedagogical issues and in “writing to learn” in mathematics.
