The nature of distinction

The Center for the Study of Nature and Society (CSNS) fosters a community that sustains ecological systems, educates for environmental awareness and global thinking, and promotes local action. CSNS strives to promote a better understanding of all aspects of ecosystems, economies and cultures through teaching and learning, integrated research, service, and action.

Students, faculty, and staff work closely with one another at the James H. Barrow Field Station and on the campus to understand how our environment works at its many levels. This engenders an appreciation of our role in our environment.
How does this enhance your education?

Through the Center for the Study of Nature and Society, you have direct involvement with:

• Collaborations with organizations such as the Audubon Society, Lake County Metroparks’ Penetentiary Glen, Ohio and National Wildlife Rehabilitors Association, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and the Akron Zoological Park.
• Wildlife rehabilitation and captive breeding of endangered waterfowl.
• Hands-on learning that has prepared Hiram students for veterinary schools and other graduate programs, as well as careers in teaching and environmental education.
• Nature program outreach, including preschool through high school students as well as community members.

The Endangered Waterfowl Conservation & Propagation Center is the first of its kind in the country. Also a first is the Hiram College and Akron Zoological Park Partnership, where the College serves as an animal holding/husbandry facility for endangered species. Students perform all aspects of animal husbandry, facility maintenance, research, water quality testing, and required Species Survival Plans reporting practices.
