The biomedical humanities major includes the science core required for medical schools. In addition it features required areas in ethics and interdisciplinary courses, communication, and diversity and relationship courses; students also complete a clinical internship of 120 hours and a research internship of 120 hours.
Accelerated biomedical humanities, with the same core as the traditional track, prepares students over three years and two summers for acceptance to medical and veterinary schools as well as graduate study.
Other primary majors influenced by biomedical humanities (traditional and accelerated 3-year program) include biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology.
Because humanities issues in health care are of great concern across many disciplines today, and because many of our students envision themselves serving in the health care professions in the future, we offer a minor in health care humanities. This minor, composed of interdisciplinary and departmental courses, emphasizes the ethical, religious, social, economic, and other non-technological issues in health care, and it addresses the complexities of solving health care problems.
The Center also offers courses to students in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) program, and these students have often chosen medical humanities as their area of concentration.
