Shattuck (Shad) Hartwell, M.D., has been a major supporter of the Center for Literature, Medicine and Biomedical Humanities since the Center started in 1990. He recognized immediately what the Center was trying to accomplish, and he donated enough support for the Center to establish “squatting rights” in Mahan House.  The Center's connection to Shad Hartwell led to the first five summer seminars in biomedical humanities at Hiram, which Warren Reich led for the Center along with other scholars in literature, medicine, ethics, and religion. Shad's generosity and genuine interest in the Center’s progress has been crucial to it’s development.
