Primary majors and minors intimately involved with the Center for the Study of Ethics and Values include general education requirements as part of the Meaning, Ethics and Social Responsibility category, and mandate that students take one of several courses focusing on ethical theories or topics. First year seminars also include writing and dialogue common to ethical topics.
Each year’s theme serves as underpinning for a fall teach-in. An example of a previous theme is “conflict”, which provided a lead-in to the Chamberlain/Hopkins Symposium on Alcohol and Culture at Hiram College. (The symposium was a response to the deaths of two Hiram students and the serious injuries suffered by a third in a crash caused by a drunken driver with 11 previous DUI convictions.)
In cooperation with the Community Service Office and the Chaplain’s office, the Center coordinates a social action program, working in particular with the Hiram House Camp, which Hiram divinity student in 1898 began, and Heifer International, which works for sustainable development around the globe.
