Office of Civic Engagement Food and Hunger Engagement Guide

The Office of Civic Engagement is facilitating the following events, activities, field trips and speakers in conjunction with the 2012-2013 annual ethics theme, Food and Hunger.

• Campus Day service activities
• Visit Lake Farm Parks in Kirtland (fun activity—they have an organic education center also)
• Ohio Master Gardner Convention in Warren Ohio
• Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary (plan to bring to campus in the fall)
• Oxfam Hunger Banquet
• Spring Bread and soup program (spring 2013)
• Take a food scavenger hunt and compare food availability in distinct communities
• Journal food consumption
• Go to a local farmers market and/or orchard and cook a meal
• Birdsong Farm in Hiram
• McKenzie’s Creamery in Hiram

Donate to or volunteer with a local food assistance agency

• In Nelson there is the newly formed Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard
• In Mantua the 4C’s operates a food pantry
• In Windham the Salvation Army operates a food pantry 
• In Ravenna the Center of Hope also operates a hot meal and food pantry
• In Kent, Kent Social Services operates a hot meal and food pantry
• In Cleveland there is the Cleveland food bank  

Individual actions:

• Get a plot at the Hiram Community Garden
• Apply to join the Stone Soup Vegetarian Coop
• Take a local food challenge
