As a student in Hiram's Environmental Studies Program, you will experience the following features that will enhance your learning experience and career preparation:
- Hands-on classes, field trips, and field based courses – provide a sense of local issues in a global context. Many Hiram EVST classes have field components that go to where it's all happening. Others are offered at the Hiram College Field Station.
- This major is also offered through the Weekend College
- Individualized area of concentration – program advisors help you to explore and develop your own professional focus.
- Internships – gain real world work experience in your area of concentration.
- Senior Seminar - a capstone project that provides an in – depth synthesis of your coursework and internship.
- Excellent professors from diverse fields – provide depth, breath, and mentoring.
- Creative Field Studies Program – this combination of environmental studies and art is a unique component of Hiram's EVST Program.
- Course exchange with other area institutions – allows you to take, for free, specialized courses that may not be available at Hiram College. See your advisor for details and restrictions.
Unique Facilities and off campus opportunities
- Hiram College Field Station – Just two miles from campus, this 260 acre plus property boasts mature forest, a coldwater stream, young forest, old field, permanent and temporary ponds, a student residence, lab and teaching buildings, and a Studio Barn for creative work.
- Northwoods Field Station - Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Hiawatha National Forest just below Lake Superior.
- Study Abroad Opportunities – Many Environmental Studies students take advantage of overseas study experiences.
- Silver Creek Farms – Are you interested in sustainable, organic farming? This nearby, well established farm has been used for internships and independent study.
