Residence Hall Safety & Security Measures

In 2006, residence halls have moved away from exterior keys for doors and card access has been installed.  Students use their college issued identification card to gain access to their residence hall.  Room keys will continue to be issued.

Residence Halls are locked 24 hours a day, however with your ID card, you may gain entrance into any residence hall 8 am to 9 pm. After that time, students should utilize the exterior phones to contact the guests they are visiting.

Exterior doors are not to be propped.  This will set off an alarm, and the hall staff are immediately notified.  Propped doors jeopardize the safety and possessions of all students.  Students should also lock their room doors at all times.  Hiram College does not insure the property of residents, so students are encouraged to carry personal insurance on their belongings.  Many homeowners’ policies will cover such belongings, students and families are encouraged to check their policies.

In addition to Resident Assistants, and a Professional Residential Education Staff member, Safety Officers are on duty each evening and can be reached by dialing x.5414.  This extension is for campus safety, police, fire, and EMS.  There is no 911 service in Hiram.  If you dial 911 your call will go to the state highway patrol.  While assistance will still be received, dialing 5414 directly will result in a more immediate emergency response.
