Statement of Student’s Rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Academic records are maintained in the office of the Registrar in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Educational rights and Privacy Act of 1974. These records are made available within 4-5 days upon written request for review by the student to whom they pertain.
Hiram College designates the following student information as public or “Directory Information” which may be disclosed by the institution for any purpose at its discretion. This information includes: name, address, telephone number, date(s) of attendance, date of birth, previous institution(s) attended, major field(s) of study, degree conferred, past and present participation in officially recognized sports and activities, physical characteristics of athletes, and other similar information as defined by the college.
Currently enrolled students may withhold disclosure of any of the above information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. To withhold disclosure, written notification must be received in the Office of the Registrar within the first week of the term. The student should also inform the Office of Public Relations in writing, as it is the responsibility of that office to provide the student’s hometown newspapers with news stories. Requests are valid for one academic year. Hiram College assumes that unless a student specifically requests withholding of “Directory Information,” individual approval for disclosure is granted.
FERPA provides for certain exceptions to the requirement of prior student consent for the release of student record information. A list of these exceptions is available in the Office of the Registrar.
