Hiram’s African-American community has a rich tradition of community leadership and involvement. To encourage students to perform at their optimum potential, a weekly workshop series, Foundations of Success: Campus Connections for African-American Students, is available to assist you in furthering your orientation into the community. While not remedial in scope, each 1-hour workshop addresses issues and topics that are deemed relevant to enhancing the first year experience.
By choosing Hiram College, you have become a part of

curricular program that will prepare you to succeed as a student and far beyond
graduation. A dedicated faculty and staff are ready to work with you as you

The Foundations of Success: Campus Connections for African-American Studentsprogram is designed to assist you in making a successful transition into
college life. While not remedial in scope, the series does intend to encourage
you to focus on academic goal setting, community involvement, and campus
leadership.
Attending these workshops can help you to gain additional knowledge about Hiram
College and can be a resource for becoming further connected on campus! --Dee

Workshop Offerings
"The Bold and The Beautiful" Our Athletic Director, Robert Thomas, a 1979 alum, will share insights on what it takes to succeed personally and academically. If you believe in motivation, attend this exciting session! A student panel will be included in this session.
"Days of Our Lives: Time Management and Academic Planning" Frank Hemphill, Director of Academic Services, provides practical tips on how to organize your life as a student. Learn how to effectively juggle tasks such as studying for tests, classroom preparation, the campus job, campus involvement, etc.
"The Guiding Light: Faculty and Classroom Expectations" It’s important to understand the differences between the high school and college classroom. Professor Abdullahi Gallab, Communications Department, will cover important issues such as meeting deadlines, classroom discussions, strategy for identifying a faculty mentor, and classroom confidence.
"General Hospital: Taking Care of Your Physical and Emotional Health" Sherry Swanson, Director of The Julia Church Health Center, will orient you to the services and resources available at the campus health center. A comprehensive tour of the Center will be included.
"As The World Turns: Planning A Study Abroad Experience" Studying Abroad can be an enriching part of the Hiram experience. Envision yourself studying marine biology on the beautiful beaches of Trinidad and Tobago or even Hawaii. Or, perhaps you’re more interested in learning about politics, communication, and human relations in the west African country of Zimbabwe, Spain, Paris, or Cambridge, England. Over 40% of Hiram students study abroad. This session, facilitated by members of the Center for International Studies, will enlighten you on how you can afford to travel abroad and expand your world!
"One Life To Live: Career Planning and Career Exploration" It’s never too soon to begin thinking about career options that are available to you. Kathryn Craig, Director of The Career Center, will share with you what you should be doing now to plan for the world following graduation.
The Foundations of Success: Campus Connections for African-American Students program is sponsored by The Office of Ethnic Diversity Affairs as a part of The Minority Student Peer Mentoring Program.
