Publishing Opportunities

On the bulletin boards in the Writing Center you will see numerous Calls for Papers and postings about contests that include publication. You will find announcements about new online literary magazines (such as nidus: a journal of contemporary art and literature), poetry prizes (James Hearst Poetry Prize, Wick Poetry Prize, Meridian Editors’ Prize), short story prizes (John Steinbeck Award for Short Story sponsored by Reed magazine, Appalachian Fiction Contest sponsored by Now & Then, Raymond Carver Short Story Contest sponsored by Toyon, Humboldt State’s literary magazine), and creative nonfiction (a competition sponsored by Cairn).

Publication opportunities are also described in reference books in the Writing Center, including Writer’s Market, Fiction Writer’s Market, Poet’s Market, The International Directory of Little Magazines & Small Presses, Market Guide for Young Writers, and Grants and Awards Available to American Writers.

There are several extremely fine journals that accept submissions exclusively from undergraduates; guidelines for submissions can generally be obtained through a journal’s website. Hiram College students are encouraged to consider sending their work to these fine magazines of undergraduate scholarship and/or creative writing:
