Community Partnerships

Each year, Hiram College partners with a number of area organizations for students to engage in civic learning.

Akron Zoo, Medina Raptor Center and Penitentiary Glen

Hiram College's Wild Life Rehabilitation and Engaged Species Reintroduction programs collaborate with area organizations to provide resources for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation & release, as well as reintroduction of endangered native species.

Anna Maria of Aurora

Anna Maria is a Continuing Care Community offering a wide range of services and care settings to residents.

Arts Alive

Arts Alive! is a local youth arts program offered by the Youth Development Program of Family & Community Services, Inc

The Back Door Thrift Room

On MLK Day in 2008, Hiram students helped to set up a community free thrift room at Hilltop Christian Church in Mantua, OH.  Hiram supports this program by collecting and distributing seasonal items such as bikes, Christmas trees, gift items, and small appliances to the thrift room throughout the academic year.

The Big Read

The Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature sponsors an semi-annual county-wide reading program, which focuses on a single book and facilitates programs and activities in schools and the community to promote literacy.

Caminante

Caminante is a NGO dedicated to helping impoverished children in the Dominican Republic. Hiram College sponsors regular service learning courses at Caminante.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities of Portage County shares the mission of Catholic Charities USA: to provide service to people in need, to advocate for justice in social structures, and to call the entire Church and other people of good will to do the same.  Catholic Charities is devoted to helping meet basic human needs, strengthening families, building communities, and empowering low-income people.

Coleman Professional Services

Coleman Professional Services is a non-profit behavioral health organization providing treatment for mental health.

Crossroads Hospice

Hiram College courses collaborate with Crossroads Hospice on a life journal program with their clients.

Energy Audit Program

The Centers for the Study of Nature and Society and Integrated Entrepreneurship sponsor a community energy audit program, where students learn technical and business skills while offering community members inexpensive energy audits and services, which benefit the environment and help make energy costs affordable.

Garfield Elementary Tutoring

This long-standing program is sponsored by the Education Department and the Civic Engagement Office.  Fifteen to twenty Hiram students individually tutor 4th and 5th grade youth weekly in the evening at Garfield Elementary School during the 12-week fall and spring terms.

GLISTEN Service Scholars

GLISTEN is a project using college faculty and undergraduates to promote stewardship of the Great Lakes through service learning projects.

Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary

Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and provides an adoption program for abused, abandoned, & neglected farm animals.

Hattie Larlham

Hattie Larlham provides health care and social programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.  Hiram College has a long-standing relationship with Hattie Larlham with various departments, student organizations, and individual students volunteering and interning at their facility in Mantua, OH.

Hiram Community Garden

Hiram Community Garden offers over 20 community plots, as well as a summer youth program on gardening, nutrition, and sustainability.  The program hopes to add adult education programs in the coming years and duplicate this program in nearby communities.

Hiram Farm Living & Learning Community

Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to grow, learn, work, and live in a setting focused on respect and support for individuals and the environment.  Hiram College supports the Farm in a variety of ways, from service learning courses, to federal work study students, to collaborations on grant opportunities, strategic planning, and special projects.

King Kennedy Community Center

The African American Students United and Kappa Sigma Pi sponsor a mentoring program for area youth at the King Kennedy Community Center.

Mahoning Valley Organizing Collective

MVOC organizes to carry out issue campaigns, research, training, and to hire and employ professional organizers to work in our neighborhoods and with our organizations.

Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard

NGCC operates a food pantry in Nelson (about five minutes from Hiram College) and invites students and community members to volunteer and share donations.

Olive Branch Fair Trade Store

Operated in collaboration with the Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship, the student-run fair trade store sells fair trade clothing, hand crafts, coffee, tea, & chocolate.

Portage Park District

The Portage Park District is a leader in conservation of natural resources and a major contributor to local communities' quality of life. They promote and develop new parks and trails and provide recreation and education programs for the community.

Renaissance Family Center

The Renaissance Family Center is a community center in Windham, which houses a number of local social service agencies and provides programs such as tutoring, an after school program, and community meals.

Robinson Memorial Hospital

Robinson Memorial Hospital is a 150-staffed-bed progressive hospital serving the residents of Portage County. The second-largest employer in the county, Robinson Memorial Hospital includes an urgent care facility; comprehensive imaging facilities; a network of physician practices; and outpatient centers and medical facilities throughout Portage County.

Salvation Army & The Northeast Portage Food Shelf

This organization is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. They provide enough groceries and other resources to supply a family for one week.  Hiram College partners with the Food Shelf by giving monetary and fresh organic vegetable donations.

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership

TNP empowers residents and promote sustainable community development through projects and programs that increase the quality of life in Warren's neighborhoods.

Woodlands at Robinson

The anchor facility for the Portage County Seniors Complex at Robinson Memorial Hospital provides short and long term care for clients.  The health care team strive to meet the holistic needs of their residents, including the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects of their care
