Technology in your Job Search

Increasingly, employers are requesting that resumes and applications be emailed or posted in an employment database.  Before you send a paper copy, check the application requirements and respect each employer's wishes. Sometimes, the employment posting will tell you how to apply. Often, the preferred application method is described on an organization's website.  Don’t send a paper copy AND an electronic copy if only the electronic copy is requested.

  • When emailing a cover letter and resume, be sure your documents are free of bold, underlining, bullets and flowery fonts. None of these graphic devices transfer well electronically.
  • Use Word only.  It is the language of business. 
  • Plan to send attachments with your email but be prepared to cut and paste your documents into an email or an application database, if requested.

Many large employers use scanning technology using keywords from the job description to identify qualified candidates. Make sure that you read the job description carefully and include the key phrases or words used on your resume. Avoid words that could trigger virus software to reject your application as well.  More information including security tips:
