NY Times and USA Today Luncheon - Newspapers in the Curriculum
- When:
- April 30, 2008 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Colleagues:
Education specialists from the NYTimes and USAToday will give a presentation on Wednesday, April 30 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Pritchard Room of the Library on the subject of newspaper usage in the curriculum. The presentation will include electronic archival access information and other benefits and services available to faculty.
This is an excellent opportunity for Colloquium faculty to consider ways in which our Collegiate Readership Program may be useful in our courses and I want to encourage all faculty to take advantage of this opportunity to consider ways in which newspapers may be useful in all areas of the Hiram College curriculum. Selfishly, I believe that even though print editions of newspapers consume precious natural resources, a greater good is served by enabling students to acquire the habit of being consumers of daily news. In time, I do believe we will be able to transition to an all-electronic service, but until that is available (and we hard copy fans move along), I justify my support of this venture in the name of cultivating a good habit. I appreciate those who have challenged me on this point, but choose to respectfully disagree.
Lunch will be provided courtesy of our presenters. The menu includes beverages, Vegetarian Soup (chef's choice), 3 cheese grilled paninis on focacia bread with tomato and red onion, pasta salad, and assorted cookies. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
PLEASE COME and PLEASE RSVP to me as soon as possible so I can make arrangements for lunch. I will send a reminder when we are closer to the date, but it is my hope that you will put this on your calendar right now (and it’s important that you eat a healthy lunch, so why not dine and learn at the same time?).
Thank you.
