Objectives
1) Integrate original research into courses across the life sciences curriculum to better engage students, encourage students to seek out further research opportunities beyond courses, and to make sure that faculty with heavy teaching and advising responsibilities don't have to relegate their research only to summer when most students are not around to benefit from it.
2) Ensure that the integration of original research into courses will be perpetuated by mentoring postdoctoral fellows in this new model, careful selection of new young faculty as the current generation of science faculty moves toward retirement, and support to help new faculty successfully move their research into their curriculum.
3) Augment original research in the classroom with additional research experiences for students outside of the classroom, both during the academic year and the summer, exposure to collaborating researchers from other institutions, opportunities to attend research conferences, and mentoring by a large number of faculty and staff.
4) Strengthen the equipment and technical base for student-driven research within and beyond courses through key equipment purchases and the hiring of an additional staff member with specific responsibility for training students and faculty in the use of the equipment.
5) Expand research-based outreach to high schools and other primarily undergraduate institutions through summer workshops, research collaborations, and equipment loans.
6) Continually improve our efforts through effective assessment of all involved parties so that future expansion of the integrated teaching/research model across the life sciences and beyond at Hiram College can occur in a timely and effective manner.
