Prizes and Awards
Every year the biology department chooses students based on eligibility and merit for the following awards:
James H. Barrow Scholarship in Biology
Established by the friends and students of James H. Barrow, professor of biology at Hiram College from 1957 to 1987, and founder of the James H. Barrow Field Station. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student majoring in field biology.
Dwight H. and Trudy Berg Scholarship
Established and endowed by Dr. Dwight H. Berg, professor emeritus in biology, and his wife, Trudy. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior biology major who has emphasis in botany and who is planning to pursue graduate work in botany.
Eastman Kodak Company Award
Established by the Eastman Kodak Company to honor employees who are graduates of Hiram College. Awarded on the basis of merit to students majoring in biology.
Grace Pickford Scholarship
Established by family, friends, and students of Grace Pickford, noted biologist. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior woman student in biology, who in addition to her current accomplishment in the discipline, plans to continue her education in biology.
Kelton Scott McMurray Memorial Scholarship
Established by the parents, brothers, and friends of Kelton Scott McMurray, D.V.M. '75. Awarded to one upper-class student majoring in biology, on the basis of character, scholastic ability, and qualities of leadership.
Mein Kind Brunhilde
Established by Hiram Anning Smith and his wife, Doris Ann, friends of Hiram College. Awarded to qualified young men and women who choose to serve human-kind through the nursing profession, on the basis of financial need.
Paul Smey Award in Biology
Established by family and friends in memory of Paul Smey '69 a distinguished pediatric urologist. Awarded to an outstanding biology major with an interest in medicine.
Thomas E. Lingafelter Memorial Award
Established and endowed by Constance Rullestad Lingafelter '59 and friends, in memory of her husband, Thomas E. Lingafelter '60, a devoted alumnus. Awared to the student who makes the most significant contribution to the work at the James H. Barrow Field Station.
