Carl Capellas enters his sixth year at the helm of the men’s soccer program in 2009. In the short time he has been at the College, Capellas’ teams have improved each year, becoming a top team in the Great Lakes Region. Capellas has brought outstanding recruiting skills to the program attracting top local, regional, national and international players. He focuses on athletes not only with strong playing ability, but also players who excel in the classroom which is evident by the men’s soccer team having earned the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) team academic award the last three years.

Under Capellas’ tutelage, the Terriers made their first postseason appearance in 12 years in 2008. Hiram’s 13-5 regular season record included the highest ever finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Following the successful season, Capellas was honored as the NCAC Coach of the Year as well as being named the NSCAA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. He was also a finalist for the NSCAA National Coach of the Year Award.

During his tenure the Terriers have produced the NCAC Newcomer of the Year, and in 2008, led the league in All-Conference players (six), and led the Great Lakes Region in All-Region players (three).

Also in 2008, Hiram had two individuals called up to their country’s full national team. It marked the first time in program history that any player played on a national squad. Graduated senior defender Trevor Gibbs and current junior goalkeeper Joe Tatum were called to the Cayman Island National Team and competed in the Digicel Caribbean Championships.

Prior to coming to Hiram, Capellas was an assistant coach at Case, working with all facets of the program. He also directed the GFS Premier Soccer Club in Brimfield, Ohio for four years, leading the team to a number one ranking in the state and earning Coach of the Year honors on multiple occasions.

A four-year letterwinner and starter ad Division I Marshall University, Capellas was a two-time captain for the Thundering Heard, an Academic All-American candidate and the school’s Student-Athlete of the Year in 1997.

A native of Warren, Ohio, and graduate of Howland High School, Capellas also coached the boys team at St. Joseph’s High School in Huntington, West Virginia, to a 20-1-1 overall record, season-long No. 1 ranking and a state runner up finish in 1998.
