Former Hiram College star Steve Fleming was named head coach on February 28, 2006, and will begin his second season at the helm in 2007-08. He returns to his alma mater after working with the Beachwood-based National Basketball Academy, which offers basketball skill training for individual players and teams.
Prior to his time at the Academy, Fleming was an assistant coach at Division II Ashland University from 2002 to 2005. Before that he coached at Tiffin University from 1997 to 2002, spending his last three years there as the head coach. Fleming was an assistant coach at Gannon University in 1996, and before that he spent one year as a graduate assistant coach at Hiram.
At Tiffin, Fleming's first team was expected to finish ninth in the challenging NAIA American Mideast Conference but tied for fourth. At one point as head coach, his Dragons had a team GPA of 2.72, the highest in five years. He toughened the schedule, created the 6th Man Club, helped develop a television program to promote Tiffin basketball, and had a 33-47 record in three years.
A 1994 graduate of Hiram, Fleming was a captain and the team's most valuable player in both his junior and senior seasons. He earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference First Team honors and All-Academic Ohio Athletic Conference honors in both seasons, and was named the Most Inspirational Player in the OAC as a junior. Fleming set school records for assists, steals, career free throw percentage, and most games played during his career, and was also a two-time recipient of the Donal Campbell Award, which is presented to the College's top male athlete.
Fleming earned a master's degree in Sports Administration from Kent State University in 1996.
Fleming lives in Aurora, Ohio, with his wife Karen and their three daughters, Kelci, Kailyn, and Alexa.
Assistant Coach Mark Anderson

Mark Anderson joins the Hiram coaching staff as an assistant in 2007-08. Anderson brings 16 years of experience in secondary education and coaching. He comes to Hiram after five successful seasons as the head coach at Cuyahoga Community College (2002-07). He also served as head coach at the University of Akron Wayne College for four seasons (1998-2002). In nine overall seasons, Anderson posted a 161-130 coaching record.
Anderson is a 1987 graduate of Adrian (Mich.) College where he earned degrees in social studies and business management. He later went on to earn a degree in secondary education from Indiana Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Ind. in 1988 and then earned a master's degree in secondary education administration from the University of Akron in 1997.
While a coach at Cuyahoga Community College, Anderson coached his teams to an 83-64 overall record including a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championship in 2004 and a NJCAA "Final Four" appearance in 2005. He was voted the NJCAA National Coach of the Year in 2004 and is two-time Regional Coach of the Year (2004 and 2005) and conference coach of the year (2005).
At the University of Akron Wayne College, Anderson rebuilt the men's basketball program recording a 78-66 overall record and averaged 19 wins per season in his last three years. In addition, he led his teams to two Ohio Regional Campus Conference "Final Four" appearances and finished second in the ORCC in 2002.
In addition to coaching, Anderson is currently a teacher at Cleveland Central Catholic High School.
Assistant Coach Mike Marcinko

Mike Marcinko will begin his second season as an assistant men's basketball coach in 2007-08. He was previously a head men's basketball coach, an assistant men's soccer coach and an instructor in the Health & Physical Education Department at Hiram from 1991-94.Marcinko earned his Bachelor's degree in Business and Education from Bluffton College and later earned a Master's degree in Education and Counseling at Heidelberg College.
Prior to returning to Hiram, Marcinko has served as a guidance counselor at the Cuyhoga Valley Career Center for the past eight years and continues that work today. He is responsible for 26 programs ranging from college planning to financial aid assitance totaling over 400 students.
In addition to previously coaching at Hiram, he has held numerous coaching positions including most recently serving as an assistant coach and interim head coach at Case Western Reserve University from 1998-2001. Marcinko also was the head basketball coach/guidence counselor at Orange High School (1994-98) and assistant men's basketball coach, head women's soccer coach and instructor at Heidelberg College (1987-91).
Marcinko currently resides in Independence, Ohio.
