Sports Complex Usage Policies
The Sports Complex is the home for intercollegiate, intramural, club, recreational sports and exercise. The Coleman Sports Center, the hub for indoor activity, houses Martin Fieldhouse, the Indoor track, Andrews Fitness center, Connor Weight room, Steinem Aerobics Studio, Krabill and Morris Racquetball Courts, Price Gymnasium, Fleming Fieldhouse, Alumni Memorial Pool, and the Administrative Office Suite. The Sports Center overlooks our outdoor venues which include; Henry Field (football and track), Fishel Field (baseball), Herndon Field (softball), the Tennis Complex, and the Soccer Complex. You are encouraged to explore the many opportunities available to learn new skills, have fun and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
General Use Policies
All patrons using the Complex will be expected to act in accordance with the following;
The Sports Complex is reserved solely for the use of Hiram College students, faculty, staff, alumni and Sports Center Club members. Patrons must be prepared to present their validated Hiram College ID if asked to do so by a Sports Center staff member.
Conduct rules/regulations per college, village, state and/or federal mandates apply to the Sports Complex. Patrons are expected to behave in a manner that will not detract from the enjoyment of others using the facilities.
Patrons are expected to adhere to the guidelines and procedures approved for activity designed for the various venues throughout the Sports Complex. Proper attire for the venue/activity is required.
Patrons are expected to consult their personal physician before engaging in an exercise program that takes place in any venue in the Sports Complex.
No person using the Sports Complex shall, except when available at a college approved event, possess or use any alcoholic beverage. This policy extends to playing fields, parking lots and surrounding areas. The use or sharing of alcoholic beverages with those under the age of 21 is a violation of Hiram College Regulations.
Demonstrators of dissent, which lead to interference with the freedom of others to use the facilities, will not be tolerated. The destruction of college property and/or obstruction of college sponsored activities is prohibited.
All public areas in the Sports Center are ‘tobacco free’. Patrons may not smoke/chew tobacco products of any kind in the facility.
Any accident/injury/incident should be reported to a Sports Center staff member in a timely fashion and should be followed by completion/submission of the appropriate Incident Report Form and/or Accident Report Form.
Patrons may post information on ‘designated’ general bulletin boards. These postings must be in compliance with college policies. Any additional postings must be pre-approved by the Sports Center staff.
Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller blades, snow mobiles and/or three wheelers are not to be brought inside the Sports Center or used on Hiram College outdoor fields/facilities.
Pets are not permitted in the common areas in the Sports Center. Approved guide dogs for the visually challenged are welcome.
Lost and found items are stored in the Equipment Room for thirty days. Any items not claimed by that time will be either discarded or given to charity. Items of significant value (as determined by the Sports Center staff) are turned over to college security. Items can be claimed by their owner upon presentation of personal identification and a description of the missing item(s). Sports Center staff members are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Selected activities require the use of Sports Center equipment, or pre-approved equipment, in order to protect the facility (i.e. functions in the fieldhouse which require protective cover for the floor).
Open-air radios/stereos, other than personal listening devices, unless approved by the Sports Center staff in a specific area, are prohibited. Building sound systems are to be operated by members of the Sports Center staff.
Children under the age of 18 must be directly supervised by a parent/guardian at all times. Children should use locker rooms and restrooms appropriate for their gender. Parents with toddlers should use the family restroom located in the lobby.
Lockers may be rented. Renters are responsible for cleaning out their lockers by the end of the rental period. If not, items will be removed and discarded. Only Sports Center issued locks may be used on lockers in the facility. Personal locks may be cut off without notice.
In the case of an emergency, patrons should use one of the campus phones which are positioned throughout the facility and follow the posted instructions.
In the event of a tornado or tornado warning, the Hiram Police Department will sound warning sirens. Patrons are to immediately proceed to the lowest level of the facility where they are located, in an interior hallway, away from windows or doors.
Price Gymnasium
Price Gym is home to William H. Hollinger Court and the site for intercollegiate volleyball, basketball, and approved court activities.
Patrons who are engaged in physical activity are required to wear shoes designed for court play, with non-marking soles.
Patrons are expected to use the facility and the equipment in an appropriate manner.
Only Sports Center staff members/designees are permitted to authorize the use of equipment located in the facility (volleyball equipment, raising/lowering basketball backboards, bleachers, etc.).
Food/drinks are not permitted unless specifically approved by the Sports Center staff. Water must be in a closed/unbreakable container.
Equipment that is placed on the wood floor must be appropriately cushioned to ensure the protection of the wood finish. Tape (or other markings) applied to the court must be approved by the Sports Center staff.
Patrons are not permitted to hang on the basketball rims.
Activities that have the potential to cause damage to the floor, walls, bleachers, backboards, lights or ceiling are not permitted without the appropriate alterations. This includes (but is not limited to); baseball, softball, soccer, football, floor hockey, field hockey and lacrosse.
Martin Fieldhouse and Fleming Fieldhouse
Martin Fieldhouse, home to Smerek Court, and Fleming Fieldhouse, home to
Gerstacker Court, are both multipurpose venues. These facilities host a variety of activities to include; basketball, volleyball, tennis, indoor soccer, baseball and softball.
Patrons who are engaged in physical activity are not permitted to wear shoes that mark the floor. No spikes or cleats.
Patrons are expected to use the facility and the equipment in an appropriate manner.
Only Sports Center staff members/designees are permitted to authorize the use of equipment located in the facility (batting cage, tennis/volleyball equipment, raising/lowering basketball backboards, dividing curtains, etc.).
Food/drinks are not permitted unless specifically approved by the Sports Center staff. Water must be in a closed/unbreakable container.
Activities that have the potential to cause damage to the floor, curtains, walls, backboards, lights or ceiling are not permitted without the appropriate alterations.
Andrews Fitness Center and Connnor Weight Room
Located on the lower level of the Sports Center, these two rooms offer a variety of choices for individual training regimens. The cardio-theater venue houses treadmills, ellipticals, stairclimbers, bikes, selectorized Quantum machines and stability balls for core body strengthening. Just across the hall you will find a full array of Olympic free weights.
An approved monitor must be on duty when either room is open for use.
Patrons are required to use the provided small towels and disinfectant cleanser to wipe all contact surfaces before/after use. The used towel is to be placed in the marked container for laundering as you leave the room.
Sign-in/check-out is required. Please record your entry time and exit time (AM/PM)
Appropriate clothing is required. Clean clothing including a shirt, clean (closed-toe) indoor shoes, a towel to wipe contact surfaces, and any other appropriate equipment.
When scheduled in advance, coaches may exercise priority use for their team. Exercise stations not being used by that team will be available for general use.
Patrons are encouraged to ask for assistance. Please do not attempt to use equipment with which you are unfamiliar.
The monitor’s station is for the monitor on duty only. Personal items are not to be stored in the Fitness Center or the Weight Room.
The music is controlled by the on-duty staff. Open-air radios/stereos are prohibited.
Equipment/weights are to be used in the specific manner intended and returned to their proper place.
No food, drink or tobacco. Water must be in a closed/unbreakable container.
Report all injuries and faulty/broken equipment to the monitor on duty.
Alumni Memorial Pool
Located on the second floor overlooking Price Gym, the pool is a six-lane, 25-meter facility which is home to intercollegiate swimming, scuba diving, water polo, intramurals, swim classes and open lap swim.
The lifeguard(s) on duty is responsible for the safety/security of all patrons who are in the pool and on the deck. Patrons are not permitted to be in the water unless there is an approved lifeguard on duty.
Patrons are expected to shower before entering the pool. Swimsuits are required for all swimmers.
Diving from the deck is permitted in water over 8 feet deep.
Dives from either board are at the discretion of the lifeguard. Only one person is permitted on a board at a time. Please do not hang on the board or on lane lines
Flotation devices (rafts, floaties) are to be used at the discretion of the lifeguard on duty. Equipment should be returned to the proper place.
Use of starting blocks is reserved for members of the Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Teams.
No food or beverages are permitted in the pool area. Water must be in a closed/unbreakable container
Steinem Aerobics Studio
Located across from the Administrative Suite, the Studio is home for aerobics, dance, martial arts and other cardio activity for individual and group sessions.
Use of the facility is limited to aerobic dance, step aerobics, dance activities, first aid/CPR sessions, stability/medicine ball sessions, grounded martial arts (yoga, tai chi, etc), and other appropriate fitness activities as approved by the Director of Athletics/designee. No athletic sports balls are permitted.
Scheduled programming has priority usage of this area.
The studio is available for individual workouts during free periods. You may provide your own workout tape.
Proper exercise attire and footwear are required. Appropriate non-marking court shoes or dance shoes are permitted. No street shoes, boots, sandals, bare feet and/or marking footwear are allowed when taking part in a physical activity or program.
Please turn the television and VCR off when leaving the room. The volume may be adjustedso that you may hear it, but it must remain at a level that does not disrupt other patrons in Sports Center.
Personal items are to be stored in the locker rooms or storage cubbies, not on the floor or in the hallway.
A group may use the room for private use for a period of one hour, or the remainder of the hour - Example: A group comes in at 7 p.m.; they may use the room until 8 p.m. The group comes in at 7:15 p.m.; they may use the room until 8 p.m. Should no one be waiting to use the room, the group may continue use for another hour.
Only class participants are allowed in the Aerobics Studio while class is in session.
A group, or an individual, may hold space for the group for 10 minutes. If no group activity begins at the 10-minute mark, the group must surrender the space to any waiting individual or group.
No gum, tobacco products, food, drinks or glass are allowed inside the Aerobics Studio. Sealed, leak proof, plastic water bottles are permitted.
All equipment used must be returned to the storage closet. No equipment items are to leave the facility. The storage closet is to be locked at all times and should be accessed by a Sports Center staff member only.
Use of tables and chairs in the Aerobics Studio is restricted to special events with prior approval from the Director of Athletics/designee and must have rubber, non-marking protectors on the legs.
Indoor Track
Located above Martin Fieldhouse, the tenth-of-a-mile, three-lane track provides special views of the Hiram landscape on all sides.
Patrons are required to have a clean pair of shoes to wear on the track. Patrons who are engaged in physical activity are not permitted to wear shoes that mark the floor. Please, no spikes or cleats.
No food, drink or tobacco. Water must be in a closed/unbreakable container.
Patrons are expected to adhere to the direction of walking/jogging that is posted for each day.
Krabill and Morris Racquetball Courts
Located on the lower level across from the Fitness Center, the two courts feature state of the art design with solid glass back walls.
Only racquet sports and wallyball activities are permitted. No other balls are to be used in the racquetball courts. Using courts for any other type of activity must have permission from the Director of Athletics.
Priority is given to 1) classes, 2) intramurals/approved organized activities and 3) recreational play by students, faculty and staff and/or Sports Center Club members. At least one person participating must have a valid Hiram College ID.
Court reservations are based upon a first come/first serve sign up basis. The sign up sheet will be located at the racquetball courts and is based upon the honor system.
Both courts are limited to one hour of playing time per person starting on the hour. If a court has not been reserved for a specific hourly time block, play is permitted on a first come/first serve basis until the next reservation time. It is not appropriate for one person or group of persons to reserve the court for consecutive time blocks.
To claim a court: If one of the players that has reserved a court does not claim their court within 10 minutes of their reserved time, their reservation will be forfeited, and the court will become available on a first-come, first-served basis.
When claiming a court in use, players should wait until the rally has ended before knocking on the door or entering the court.
The official clock for settling time discrepancies will be the clock located on the north wall of the Fitness Center.
For safety, protective eyewear should be worn at all times during play and racquets must have a wrist lanyard worn by players at all times.Metal racquets must be equipped witha protective head guard to avoid damaging the walls.
Shoes must be carried in! Non-marking shoes only. Shoes or balls that mark the court surface will not be permitted.
Players should refrain from hitting the walls or floors of the courts with the racquet.
Racquetball, squash or tennis racquets must be used with a racquetball, squash or tennis balls respectively.
Drink containers are not allowed in courts.
Gym bags, sweatshirts, racquet covers, etc. are to be left outside of the court area. A storage box is available on each court for small storage purposes. Good sportsmanship is expected at all times. Any player that displays unsportsmanlike conduct may be asked to leave the court.
Squash Court
Located above Fleming Fieldhouse, this former squash court is now home to a variety of activities to include martial arts, cheerleading, golf, and aerobics.
Charles A. Henry Field
Henry Field is home to intercollegiate football and track & field. The facility features a natural grass surface and six-lane all weather track.
Robert O. Fishel Field
Located just northeast of Henry Field, Fishel Field is home to intercollegiate baseball.
Dr. Myrtis E. Herndon Field
The ‘Myrt’, home to intercollegiate softball, is located just north of the student parking lot.
Tennis Complex
The 3 courts, just north of Henry Field, serve intercollegiate tennis, classes, and open play.
Soccer Complex
Located just east of Henry Field, the natural grass field is home to intercollegiate soccer.
Each of these playing fields is off limits to recreational use without prior approval. Motor vehicles are not to be driven/parked on the fields. Only authorized maintenance vehicles are permitted.
