The Minor in Exercise and Sport Science
Program Description
Our program provides students the opportunity to explore and experience a wide range of areas in fields such as sports medicine/sports health, sports management, sports psychology and human performance. The program is designed for those interested in working with the physically fit, athletic or healthy individuals and groups or in the health professions.
Core courses
The program is built around six courses that encompass a basic understanding the human body and its reaction to exercise, activity and human performance. The coursework includes Kinesiology, Physiology of Exercise, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Personal and Community Health and Basic Athletic Training as well as other required and elective courses.
Specialty courses
Students choose an area of specialization, which is culminated in a course specifically designed to develop basic knowledge and understanding of their chosen specialty. The areas of specialization are Sports Health, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Administration, and Human Performance.
Capstone experience
After completing the specialty course, students are required to complete one of the following: an internship to gain practical experience in an actual work environment; a seminar paper with significant research including a presentation; or a proficiency exam to measure knowledge of subject matter. Students begin this process during the junior or senior year.
Areas of Specialization
Sports Health
Designed for the student interested in allied health care professions and working in a sports medicine environment. Students typically pursue additional education through a specialized allied health area or graduate studies. Employment opportunities are in all aspects of the medical field depending on the students' interest (i.e. Physical Therapy, Physicians Assistant, Nursing, Paramedic, Physician, Athletic Training).
Strength and Conditioning
Designed for the student interested in the scientific aspect of the fitness industry and specific certification programs. Employment opportunities as a strength coach, personal trainer or in fitness management are available through the academic environment, professional organizations, health and fitness clubs, private and corporate fitness and other fitness related employers. Interested students can pursue certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist or Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as other certifying organizations.
Sports Administration
Designed for the student interested in the administration and organization of athletic programs, facilities and personnel. Employment opportunities are in academic environments, in marketing, promotion and sales as well as facility management in a variety of athletic and sports oriented areas.
Human Performance
Designed for the student interested in the emotional and intellectual function of performance and athletics. Employment opportunities are in the academic environment, counseling and the private business sector. Students usually pursue graduate studies in sports psychology or sports administration.
