National Recognition
Founded in 1850, Hiram College is nationally recognized as a leading liberal arts college and is one of 10% of colleges in the U.S. to host a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. We are featured in the Loren Pope’s Colleges That Change Lives, the Princeton Review’s 373 Best Colleges, included as one of 266 colleges in U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges, and most recently prominently featured in the top half of all schools in Forbes Magazine’s America’s Best Colleges 2010, ahead of many better-known colleges and universities. Considering there are more than 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., all of this recognition is quite a distinction. The Forbes’ list is of particular note because unlike one of the other better-known ranking sources that primarily measures input data, Forbes’ methodology attempts to measure the actual quality of education and value-added student achievement; in other words, what a college can do for you, not what you can do for the college.
Hiram College also voluntarily participates in two other assessments of note.
The Collegiate Learning Assessment is a new tool developed by the nonprofit Council for Aid to Education. It tests the higher-order critical thinking, analysis, and communication skills that all college students should learn. Over 370 institutions and 110,000 students participate in the CLA nation-wide. For more information on the CLA, visit www.cae.org.
