The Global Politics course at Western Reserve Academy combined with the Crisis Simulation Exercise at Hiram College will constitute a three-credit-hour college-level course.

Description of 8 – Day Global Politics Course at Western Reserve Academy

This eight-day course will examine the manner in which politics plays out at the international level.  We will explore questions regarding why wars break out, why some states -- such as those in Europe -- are forming complex regional political structures, why the United States pursues the sorts of foreign policies that it does, how international organizations such as the United Nations function, and what the future likely holds in terms of the prospects for global conflict and peace.  A special sub-focus of this course will pertain to US-Russian relations, not only because important aspects of global politics have transpired in the context of this particular relationship, but because the focus of the crisis simulation -- which will follow directly upon the completion of this 8-day Global Politics course at Western Reserve Academy -- will pertain to an international crisis involving Russia and the US.

Description of 4 – Day Crisis Simulation Exercise at Hiram College

The Exercise offers a truly unique opportunity for students to engage in a crisis simulation with individuals who have spent careers in the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, and other areas of government.  The students will be divided into groups, with each group representing either a branch of the U.S. government, a government agency, another government, or an international organization.  These groups will then interact strategically with each other -- under the guidance of the government professionals -- as they respond to an international political crisis.

The Crisis Simulation Exercise is a four-day, residential summer learning experience held on the Hiram College campus, located in Hiram, Ohio.  Hiram's campus is a 45-minute drive from Cleveland and Akron. Participants will stay three nights in a residence hall.

Hiram College will award a $1,000 Summer Academy Scholarship to every high school student who attends a 2015 summer academy and enrolls as a full time student at Hiram College. Only one Summer Academy Scholarship will be awarded per new student. The scholarship is renewable up to four years. (For a total of $4,000 in scholarship award at $1,000 per year for four years.)
