Emerging Writers Workshop - June 22-25, 2016

What is it?

This residential writing workshop introduces rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to the central components of creative writing—voice, image and scene.

Students will concentrate on writing short inventive pieces in multiple genres that integrate strategies discussed in the work- shop. Participants will have the opportunity to share their work with others and gather feedback in order to make thoughtful and effective revisions.

The workshop will conclude with a public reading of students’ work. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.


$325, including room and board

Scholarship Opportunity

Hiram College will award a $1,000 Summer Academy Scholarship to every high school student who attends a 2016 summer academy and enrolls as a full time student at Hiram College. The scholarship is renewable each year for up to four years. Only one Summer Academy Scholarship will be awarded per new student.

Workshop sessions will be set in Hiram College’s unique 1890s Stephen and Jacquelyn Love Writing House and its 500-acre James H. Barrow Field Station.



The 2016 Emerging Writers Workshop is aimed at high school students who are rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. Please submit one registration form and one payment per student.  Registration will begin in the Spring of 2016.

The total cost for the Emerging Writers Workshop is $325.  Meals, housing and all activities associated with the workshop are covered in this price.  The online registration form is linked to two online payment options.  Payment arrangements include:

Online by Credit Card: Hiram College accepts American Express, Discover, and MasterCard.  When paying by credit card, please note that a 2.5% convenience fee will be included in the total amount charged.

Online by Electronic Check: There is no convenience fee when paying by E-check.

Other Requirements for Participation

500-word Creative Writing Sample: Registrants are asked to attach a 500-word creative writing sample with their registration. Students may include a short piece in its entirety or an excerpt from a longer work, provided they remain within the 500-word limit. The sample should be prose fiction or nonfiction; no poetry samples will be accepted.

Reference: On the registration form, students are asked to provide the name, title, telephone number and email address of a teacher or guidance counselor who is willing to serve as a reference on their behalf.  We assume that references are aware that students have used their names and that they may be contacted.

The first applicants to complete the registration process in its entirety and submit their full payment will be considered for acceptance.  High school students who are rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are welcome to register.  Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The deadline for registration is June 1, 2016.   Interested students are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Notification of Acceptance

Once students have registered and paid in full, their registration materials will be reviewed by the faculty leading the workshop.  As soon as a student has been approved, Kathy Luschek will send out an email notifying the student that he or she has been accepted to attend.

A week or so before the Emerging Writers Workshop, students will receive via email a link to materials for the workshop including:

Refund Policy

Full payment must accompany registration to be considered for acceptance.  A full refund will be issued for those students not accepted into the workshop.  Students who choose to withdraw at least three weeks prior to the first day of the workshop will receive a 50% refund.  No refunds will be made after that date.
