Hiram College

To qualify for a natural history minor, students must choose from the required list of courses and electives. Students are also encouraged to spend time working or becoming involved at the James H. Barrow Field Station and/or completing an internship or study-abroad trip that can complement their studies.

Required Courses:

  • Environmental Education (EDUC/EVST 20500 – 4 hrs)
  • Introductory Biology I (BIOL 15100 – 4 hrs, SM)
  • Ecology (BIOL/EVST 27800 – 4 hrs)
  • Capstone (1 hr)

Elective Courses:

1 – Students must choose three field courses with at least one course from each category below:

Field-based organismal courses:

  • Ornithology (EVST 38000 – 4 hrs)
  • Herpetology (BIOL 38000 – 4 hrs)
  • Vascular Plants (BIOL 31600 – 4 hrs)
  • Nonvascular Plants (BIOL 21300 – 4 hrs)
  • Entomology

Field-based systems courses:

  • Wildlife Management (BIOL 250 – 4 hrs, SM)
  • Marine Ecology (BIOL 34200 – 4 hrs)
  • Aquatic Biology (BIOL 38000 – 4 hrs)

  • Wetlands, Rivers, Coastal Plains (EVST 35500–4 hrs)
