Hiram and Opera

Hiram College students and Hiram community members come together to perform fully staged short operatic works and scenes from full-length operas and musical theatre each year, thanks to The Marcia Kenyon Bissell endowment.

The music and/or theatre arts departments hold auditions, conduct rehearsals and present performances to the community. Students of all majors are invited to audition.

Recent productions have included John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, scenes from works by Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan and musical revues of composers Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and George Gershwin.

In 2014, Associate Professor of Music Dawn Sonntag premiered her original opera, Verlorene Heimat, as part of the Marcia Kenyon Bissell Musical Theatre Opera Workshop. Listen to her discuss the project:
