The department emphasizes a firm grounding in relevant theories, concepts, and skills as well as extending learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. Faculty members in the department strongly encourage students to broaden their perspectives and understandings of classroom learning by participating in overseas study programs. Department faculty members have led and continue to lead trips to Tanzania, China, Japan, Turkey, Greece, Bhutan and Russia.
In addition to these international opportunities, the department offers a range of hands-on learning experiences that are closer to campus. Department faculty advise an active Investment Club which is responsible for managing a portfolio of assets currently valued at over $50,000. Students participate in field research projects consulting directly with off-campus organizations. Students majoring in Economics and Management are required to complete an independent research project during their senior capstone experience. Department faculty are also active advocates of students gaining internship experiences, serving as liaisons between students and institutions to assist with the coordination of internship opportunities.
